Just got back from BPS and picked up some stuff (I had a gift card that I was itchin' to burn up). I got another one of them big Cheasapeake Bay Bunker Spoons. (They are only 12.99 there, they are 19.99 at BW:eek2: ).

I think I want to rig it tandem behind a big mojo or somepin' to get it down there?

How do y'all troll them?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim-my favorite rig is to use a 3/0 three way swivel.Tie 4-6' of 60 lb clear Ande off one leg and tie a 6-20 oz parachute/Mojo to that.On the other leg-put a Sampo 150 lb ball bearing snap swivel-15' 60 lb leader-a Sampo swivel-then 15' of leader.Tie the spoon to this.I like to add a second split ring to the spoons.Let it back 100-200'.Make sure to sharpen the hooks-some fish will get hooked on the outside of their mouth.

Other way is just the leader and spoon-back 300-350'.This works best when few boats are around. Skip

I like the big bunker spoon on the rare occasion that I troll. It has been productive for me. I usually rig it alone with an in line 5 oz on a side rigger at 75 out. Ball Bearing swivels are a must on flouro leader with power pro. I go no more than 4 rods at any time so the wandering is not so much an issue...some guys put them on a dummy line.

On my WWB tandem, I was planning on running a big CA on the long leader and a 4-6 oz chute on the short leader. I could replace the 4-6 oz chute with a heavier 20-24 oz mojo, but wouldn't running that rig deeper increase the chance of a tangle with my other lines? Is there more success with a CA running shallow or deep? I've never run one before.

russelraven-spoons can be deadly but they can also cause tangles.I run one back 300' with a 4oz parachute as the "weight".That rod is off the hard top.My deep spoon is on wire-100' back with a 16 or 20 oz MoJo.This rod is out 90* from the boat in a rod holder on the railing. Some days I'll have 8-10 spoons out. Some off the boards-others 200' back with 10 oz parachutes. Each boat's rod holders are set up differant-you need to experiment where each rod will go.Biggest tip is to avoid sharp turns-the spoons will tangle other lines then.Always let spoons out S L O W L Y- and be ready for a hit. Each season we catch 2-3 fish letting the spoons out.The green/chart Cripple Alewive in the 11/0 or 13/0 size should be out every trip.It will catch fish. Thanks Skip, I appreciate the advice. You are always so helpful on this board and I've learned alot from your posts. I wanted to start using a CA, especially to regulate boat speed. I've got a green CA size 11, but was going to go with a gold 13 because I heard they were good in the spring. Should I go with the green instead? Don't think I want to run more than 1, unless I rig it deep off a cannonball(poor man's down rigger) or a heavy mojo.

Russelrave-you B-mail is not open. Thanks for the compliment-I'll share what I think works.Right when I think I understand the fish-they let me know I still got tons to learn.

The 13/0 Cripple Alewive is not as good a speed indicator as a Tony #21.The Tony at the right speed will make the rod tip go:bounce, bounce ,bounce then a long dip.1-2-3 then FOUR.The C/A just swims along.I keep a #21 on a leader-no rod.I let it off the side of the boat to check my speed if the bite is slow.I like to see it swim then roll over once.It should not spin.Once you see it-you'll understand.

The gold spoons can be good but work best on real cloudy days.I have caught on clear days but it runs hot/cold.If you are only buying 1-buy the yellow/chart. colored one.Day in/day out-it will catch.I have about 20 of them-every color plus some I repainted.Watch for spoons at flea markets.I've picked up brand new-in the package-C/A 13/0's for $5.00.:)) Skip
