    While it’s been mayhem in Virginia with huge numbers of giant striped bass and an invasion of big bluefin, it’s still been quiet on Maryland’s portion of Chesapeake Bay. When the weather has been decent, or at least “decent” by January standards, freshwater anglers have put the hook to yellow perch, pickerel and crappie.

    The focus for Maryland anglers is now primarily freshwater fishing, and the fishing shows and sales now underway. The Pocomoke River has given up yellow perch, crappie and pickerel, while anglers braving the elements on the Potomac have located a few nice bass, both smallmouth and largemouth, and an occasional tiger muskie.

    It’s been relatively quiet on Maryland’s portion of Chesapeake Bay, although some hard core light tackle anglers are finding some striped bass action in the warm water discharges and in and around the Bay Bridge area. There are freshwater opportunities available to anglers during the winter months, and fishermen on the Pocomoke River have been hooking up with crappie, pickerel, and yellow perch. The Potomac River has featured decent wintertime largemouth bass action.

    Rain rain go away are the words coming from Maryland fishermen over the last few weeks. Between all the run off and high winds anglers have had a hard time catching a break. The water in the upper bay to the Bay Bridge and below is a mess, debris everywhere and the water the color of chocolate milk. The debris and ugly water extends below the Choptank River, however reports are that in Maryland's lower Chesapeake the water is pretty clear.     It's been a scorcher in the Maryland region and the heat got me behind on getting out the Maryland fishing reports, but better late then never. Along with the hot weather has come some hot fishing in the Chesapeake Bay from the Bay Bridge down to the Gas docks in the lower Maryland portion of the bay for striped bass. Overall you can find some spot, throw them in the live well drop them in some hot areas such as in and around the Bay Bridge, Poplar Island, the False Channel or the Gas Docks and have yourself some good fun with plenty of keepers. Croaker fishing continues to be good through out the middle and lower bay region. Blue fish are becoming more prevalent in the lower Maryland bay, but working their way south.     The water temperatures at the upper end of the Chesapeake around the Susquehanna Flats is hovering around 85 degrees. The water temperature at Thomas Point is averaging 81 degrees....we are in the full summer fishing pattern! The heat wave brought with it spot to the region and anglers are catching them for the frying pan as well as for live lining stripers. Speaking of live-lining, it's in full swing from the Bay Bridge to the Gas Docks. Croaker fishing has been good through out the Maryland Chesapeake region as well. Some flounder reports this week in Maryland's lower Chesapeake and perch are plentiful through the main bay and tidal rivers. Fishing on the coast out of Ocean Cityis heating up. Anglers are catching yellow fin tuna, bluefin tuna, plenty of dolphin and the billfish are showing up in decent numbers. Check the full fishing report for all the details ...
