When I told my friend about catching a few rockfish yesturday morning he said he wanted to try to get some too. So after I got home from Richmond with the family I called Jason and said lets go. Put the boat in the Piankatank at 5:30 and back on the trailer at 7:00. We rode around watching the finder till we started seeing fish hanging around 4 to 5 feet down in 8 to 10 feet of water. Trolled red 1/4 ounce jighead with 4 inch chartruse grub, red 1/4 ounce jig head with 3 inch chartruse shad, White 1/4 ounce jighead with chart. grub and tried a chart. 1/2 ounce bucktail. After trolling for about 10 minutes Jason says 'I think we need to do something else, we aren't catching anything'. As soon as he says it we get the first fish. Things were pretty steady for the next hour. Caught 6 rocks all on red head with chartruse bodies. Nothing interested in other color combinations. We got 2 keepers at 21' and 19.5'. Most fish were caught on my little ultra light 4.5 foot ugly stick. I'm gonna have to get some larger shad and grubs and maybe some heavier red head jigs to try and go a little bigger and deeper. Water temp on my finder was 61 on the surface and all fish were caught in 8 feet of water. Great fun and with the little boat with 5 horse motor I don't think I burned more than a quart of gas.[grin]
