I went to Deltaville to check my boat that is back into its slip after dock repairs from Ernesto and decided to fish for a couple hours. What a beautiful day! Just went out to R2 then the end of Windmill Point. Passed a lot of boats at the spike. At R2 there was a tremendous amount of bait in the water. I was hoping to get some grey trout and kept getting my 20 lb mono leader cut. I thought it might be bluefish, but then I caught a 2 foot shark. I kept losing line and hooks so moved over to just off Windmill bar. Didn’t get much there but saw a few breaking fish and bird over in the 19 foot area. Made a few casts with a spoon and caught a 2-3 lb bluefish. They seemed to be scattered all over, but I did not pursue them. I put out my 2-0 circle hood with squid and sat down making a phone call when something hit it. I assumed it was a blue fish or shark, but when my leader did not break, I got more interested. After about 10 minutes, I got a look and could see it was a big red fish. Took another 10 minutes to get him to the boat. It was 38” and 22 lbs. Unfortunately; it was over 26 inches so I had to let him go. He seemed kind of happy about that.
Back at the dock I talked to some folks who had caught bluefish and released rockfish to 24” at the NN Reef chumming and another group was cleaning a bunch of spot from the Rappahannock.
