I have been watching the weather and I am ready for my first trip.
I want to take my 212CC Hydra Sport out of Hatteras. Sunday looks like it could be a good weather day.

Looking for some recommendations from the experts. Does Sunday look like a good weather day? I would also like to buddy up with someone. How about a few suggestions on rigs?

I am anxious to get out and try some blue water fishing.

My only piece of advice (don't take this the wrong way)...you cannot look at Sunday's weather prediction on Weds and expect anything. I would be comfortable about Saturday's weather say after the 11am Friday update. I'll have a good feel for the weekend by Thursday afternoon but will pull the plug on a trip on short notice...if it changes or looks questionable. I've taken enough beatings down there to know that a 15 knot forecast will be much worse offshore.

If you're going down anyway, just be prepared to jump in the boat and GO...if it turns nice, even in the late morning, you can fish a good, long day since your run to the fish will be less than 30 miles...

Strong SE winds, stay home. Strong N or NE, you'll get out of the inlet but will take a beating offshore.

Be carefull leaving the inlett. Our first time six years ago leaving the inlett sent us over a sand bar you should have seen the look on my fathers face new boat waves breaking over the hard top scared the he$$ out of him. The gps and the ocean boey was incorrect in his garmin. Wait to follow one of the charters out. The easy spot to start and find is the rock pile. With the temperatures like they are I would troll north to the tower. I hate using them but planer boards have never failed me down there this time of year for the long skinny striped fish with teeth. Usually burgandy/black. blue/white yellow/pink still the best place on earth to fish, just a long way to go to get there. Best of luck, be carefull there is a chance i will be fishing in NC this weekend if you guys want give me a yell. My boat is the DRAG-n-Bait.

Greg makes a good point...you always need to be careful down there but we went out of the inlet two weeks ago and it was marked very well and appeared to be plenty wide and have a decent amount of water on the bar (12-14ft I think).

There was also an unmarked channel on the north side which we ran by following a charter...inlet was very calm overall.

Good luck!

Thanks much for the words of wisdom and the advice. I am watching the weather every day. I understand SW and under 15 is good. So that is what I am looking for.

I plan to follow the charters out. What time do they leave the dock? I will probably be staying in Nags Head and driving down in the morning. I am not even sure where the ramp is. I have never fished out of Hatteras.

Any helpful info is greatly appreciated.
