Unfortunately, my report is very simlar to Franky P.'s... We hit Massey's Saturday (5/28) after a late Saturday morning start and trolled around the scallopers hoping to find these BFT we had been hearing about. Unfortunately, the water out there was barely 53 degrees and the only thing we found were some bluefish after a couple of hours effort. Decided to move inshore to the Jackspot and shark. Caught the bluefish we needed and set up a slick and drift. All the sharks you want if you are into the spiny dogfish variety. Only live bluefish kept the dogfish away. Water was 53-54 degrees and no makos anywhere. Spoke with the guys at Ake and Sunset when we returned and still no one with a mako in OC yet this year.
Monday we set up SE of the Jackspot after catching our bluefish again. Same old story of spiny dogfish. One of the crew members had some old nasty ballyhoo, so he kept catching bluefish while we drifted and fought off the dogfish. The water did heat up to nearly 57-58 degrees by mid-day on Monday. Picked up our lines at 1pm and cleared the inlet about 1:30pm.
First trip offshore for my new Contender 31 Open "Notorious" and it sure was nice. Flat seas all weekend and 50+ MPH wherever you wanted to go. We had a great time both days, but didn't find Mr. Mako this trip. We'll probably give it another try in a week or so.
Good luck to anyone fishing the Mako Mania. I think you are going to need it!
