Post for REGULATOR fishing out of Hatteras Sat. & Sun.
1st thanks to Tony & Larry for pulling the Regulator down to Hatteras for a great weekend.
We had a blast !
Sat. Fishing – Tony, Larry & myself - With the poor reports from earlier in the week we looked @ the most recent Sat. shots and decided to run S to the 800 line. We were 1st out of the inlet @ 4:30am & met with gnarly seas + a wet ride out into the SE wind. The expectations of running 50 miles quickly changed to expectations of being the 1st boat to drop lines @ the Rock Pile. Temp. was +- 72 on the Rock Pile when we dropped lines in while sitting on the floor to rig baits. The 23’ Regulator CC is a sweet ride but it was 4-6 out there and howling SE wind. We worked the Rock Pile for a while and then made our way E to the 50 fa. curve & found a nice weed line. Pulled down the line and quickly put 1 gaffer in the box. Got the spread back out & whammo ….. 5 big gaffers on the line & going crazy. 4 Stay tight and we work them to the ice for the oil bath to come. It was non-stop action all day while holding on & we ended up with 17 Gaffers, lost at least that many more that came tight and went through 3 + packs of ballyhoo. @ the end of the day coming into Teach’s we were all beat, wet, bruised but had the biggest smiles on our face you had ever seen. We thought we might have a chance @ the TFBB tourney with a 21 lb Gaffer bc we didn’t think the other boats did as well from the sounds on the radio. Hot baits were pink spreader bar, pink / crystal witch, green / crystal witch & the wwb bird / green machine even got into the action. Capt. Fred pulled through with a great 30 lb. Mahi to take the whole pot.
Sat.. Pic. @ the dock bc we couldn’t get our cameras out @ sea.

Sun. Fishing – Tony, Larry, Brenda & myself – Hoping & praying for calmer seas we eased out of the inlet again 4:30am only to be pleasantly surprised at how calm it actually was. Auto pilot on & cruising 30 + mph out to the same weed line from the day before. Water was in the 60s on the Rock Pile and only 64 where we were fishing in 74-75 deg. water the day before. ??????? Without a Sat. shot or other meat reports from the day we gambled and decided to run S on the 100 fa. curve. About 6 miles S it started coming up slowly, when it reached 70 deg. we found the prettiest weed line you had ever seen that stretched both directions. 3 lines were rigged and 2 went in the water while everyone started to take off the foul weather gear and put out the outriggers. We hadn’t even turned S to start pulling down the line & someone yelled “ Fish On ! “ 2 Gaffers airing out behind the boats on the only 2 lines in the water. They come tight and we get 1 in the box only Brenda is fighting the other and can’t seem to gain ground. We all looked @ her thinking the drag wasn’t set right but no, it was a big one ! While she was fighting the big bull we put out another bait and caught another gaffer. Finally he gave up after a long fight and was in the box. How about that for a start to the day & it was flat calm so we could see them lit up in the water. The next 1 ½ hrs. we couldn’t get 7 rods out before getting covered up again. All but 2 fish came on triple hook ups & we were still the only boat in the area. We tried calling on 69 but couldn’t raise any TFs bc most were too far N or S of us. @ 8:30 am with a doz. Mahi in the box we decided that was enough & started looking for Tuna. Found great water, flying fish, temp changes everything but couldn’t get a Tuna in the spread for the rest of the day. Turns out the hot Tuna bite was +- 45 miles N of us & we couldn’t hear the guys calling us on the radio. Thanks Bill, wish we had been there. Hot baits same as day before.
Turns out the 1st fish was the $$$$ Mahi for the TFBB Calcutta & we all had a great dinner on the house w/ lots of laughs @ Odens to cap off a great 2 days of fishing.
