Does anyone know where I can buy new bushel baskets instead of used baskets? Not the plastic ones. I can get used ones from a crab house for $3.00, but some are really smelly and beat up. Can anyone give me a name and phone number of a place that sells them?

You can get new ones from Angler's Sports Center right before the Bay Bridge. I bought one last week for $7.95. My old one was smelling kind of funky too.

You guys missed the pool order earlier this spring.

Ya gotta pay attention and stop playing hookey from TF crabbin' school. We bought a load of 'em for less than $5.00 with tops. Had to go to Lancaster, PA to get them.

No, I didn't get any extras. Maybe RJ has a few.

Clydes sport shop was advertising them in a local paper for a ridiculous price. I think they were 3.75 a piece with a top. If that price is correct, that is a great price!!

How about a place to buy the plastic ones ? I like the wooden ones but they don't last very long.

Thanks.

i'm pretty sure i saw them in shore sportsman in easton for 3.50 a basket.....not sure it included a lid, but i'm assuming it did.

i get mine from a local seafood store....they almost always have some extras....at least the place i go does. the last time i bought some i think i probably paid 2 bucks a piece.

Just wunnerin', why not plastic?

We bought some round plastic laundry baskets years ago and they're still workin'. And those plastic lids you see around crab houses fit nearly perfectly, probably because these particular baskets are the same size as the wooden bushel baskets. Wish I had bought more of them, because you can't find them today.

It is actually in Lebanon, PA. This is where rj got them.

Be carful with plastic baskets as they are larger then a bushel. Don't won't a piece of paper from the man that has a hefty fine associated with it. [grin]

The plastic (laundry) baskets we have hold exactly 2150.42 cubic inches of crabs!!

Hey BigWillJ,

Sorry, I'm referring to the orange perferated baskets that commercial fisherman use. They are actually 1 1/4 bushel.

Also someone said the crabs will climb out of the plastic ones becuase of the holes in the sides. The wooden ones have vertical slits.

Hard Bottom wooden Baskets came from C R Henry in Lebanon Pa. they come in stacks of 42 with lids. you have to call for current prices

the 1 1/4 bu orange plastic fish baskets can be bought fron Victory Packageing in Hanover Md. I don't know what the minimun quantity or price is but you can call them and find out. they also come in blue. the company that makes the basket does not make lids for them you must fond or make your own lids

We solved that problem by using a dark basket inside of a lighter colored outer basket to offset the (square) holes. Figure dark on the inside to keep 'em calm; lighter on outside to keep 'em cool. Double bottom allows a layer of water underneath for further cooling, and, Heaven forbid, protection in case the bottom decides to give way when dunking crabs for final ride home. Plastic lid on top, and a wet towel on top of that, and they keep nicely until they hit the steamer.

Keep in mind though, that we're just a couple of occasional crabbing recs and not crabbers who need multiple baskets to bring home a day's catch. I can see where replaceable wooden baskets would be better for that operation. With just the two of us, our baskets have been in use for many, many years, and again, only on occasional crabbing trips throughout any one year. They might not take the abuse of day-in and day-out use, which would be too expensive, but for us, it's been a very long time since we had to replace any baskets.

Don't forget to check your local orchard or produce stand also!
