Got 40 lb. of necks the other day and had 4 of these in the box. This has always been a sign of a good crabbin season.....!
Sorry for the screw up. I'll try again

I always get a kick when my wife helps me salt down necks
and i toss one to her with the head still attached [smile]
Come to think of it she doesn't help me any more[wink]

I use bull lips, I sure hope I don't find the rest of the head!

A talking head is good at times. So is a little head.
No nasty responses please!

Hey I'm a total rookie at the crabbing game and just got my first lesson form you folks on salting eel. Now I read about salting chicken necks. Why and is it necessary to salt the necks? Thanks again for the info. Catching 40" rock seems a lot easier.[grin]........But not as tasty.[excited]

It toughens them. Makes em last longer. I do the same to bull lips.
I thought I read somewhere it was illegal to use eels for crab bait anymore...

I am guessing the salt is for a trot line that is baited and going to be re-used. The salt keeps the bait somewhat preserved....

Makes sence to use salted necks for the trot line. Got another rookie question. When you pull your line at the end of the day do you rebait then and store the line in a freezer until next time? I'm looking into buying a chest type freezer for the garage anyway. My wife is complaining that I've got the freezer full of fish. Anyway, thanks again for the info.

I think most people un bait it and rebait it when they are ready to use it again. I use bull lips and they last a bit longer. I put mine in the freezer and I usualy get 2-3 uses out of one baiting, but then I only use mine for 1-2 hours before I either catch what I want or get frustrated and quit. (haven't done that in a while) Last week we caught 11 dozen in 1 hour. More than enough for us and friends.

Yep, if you have room
Don't leave any old necks on the line.
If crabbing was good there will only be neck bones[grin]

300 lbs of eel? If you have a source you don't mind sharing...I would be interested. Eel is getting tougher to come by each year.
