I had a mission. 3 bushels of crabs, and home in time to get a nap before my 18 guests arrived at 4 pm.
I needed 2 and wanted to send my newbie dipper home with a bushel. I barely made it.
We had 2000 feet of straight line in the water by 5:15. We were putting the top on our first bushel at 6:30. I thought it would be no problem, but the current died and it steadily got worse. By 11:30 I was able to go home with just shy of 3 bushels, which turned out to be enough for the parties.
There are some lovely crabs in the Pax right now, so get out and get some if you can. I was proud to present these crabs to my guests last night.
As for the straight line.....I am beginning to finally become a believer in snoods, after watching my friends consistently out crab me, time after time. If you know who my friends are that I am talking about, you know they are not outsmarting anyone [grin] Just kidding
My first 1200 feet of soft lay should be ready in about a week, time willing.
By the way, my newbie dipper turned out ot be a stellar dipper. he never missed a crab!!!! NO BS...he never missed a crab, and was all over the place going after ones that were dropping off the line. As a bonus, he could drive the boat like a pro as well, on the few times that I dipped.
Any of you guys ever need a Ho, to fill an order, let me know. I will highly recommend this guy.
Hope you all had a wonderful Fathers Day.

Welcome to the growing list of snood line converts. You’ll fit right in since the major requirement is not being able to outsmart anyone.[grin][grin][grin][grin][grin][grin][grin][grin][grin][grin][grin][grin
Glad you got all the crabs you needed for the party. Had to be a tough job with the gear you had to use and the current not in your favor. Take some time out from counting all your $$$$$$$ and make yourself a decent roller for that new snood line. You’ll be glad you did. [excited]

Crabbed right along side a "snoodliner" this weekend and I outcrabbed him 5/1. He was complaining that the crabs didn't want to come of the bottom once the had a hold of the snoods, he could see them. I ran the snood line with him once and it seems that it just runns too slow for me....kinda like chicken neck'n from a pier....and I wasn't impressed with the amount of crabs we harvested as opposed to running a strait line. This was the first and only person I ever ran a snood line with and seen in action so perhaps he wasn't running it right.....but with the additional work involved, and handling practices much more difficult and cumbersome....I just prefer to run a straight line. Faster and easier and when the crabs are biting and hungry, I really don't think it matters, but like I said....this was the first and only time I seen it ran before. May have to attend "Snoodfest".
......Way to go, nice catch and report.[smile]

Good job on the crabs, As I recall your building skills are some what like mine(non-existent)
If your in need of a roller as Jerry suggest, check out Skip Jack Marine on Kent Island. They usually
Carry them. Sounds like you’re doing OK otherwise.

I tried to get you on the nextel yesterday, but couldn't. We were there in the pax as well. Started at the last place I crabbed with you at about 6am. One line in 4 ft to about 6ft and the other in 6 to about 9. Caught many many babies on the shallow one and some better ones on the deeper. Then low tide hit and it stopped pretty much on the deeper one. Move that one to about 3.5 ft after seeing a comm just north of me in that depth. Caught a few more to give us just about a basket full before the wind chased us north of the bridge. Ended up with a bushel and a half by about 1pm. Wasn't great, but we got enough for the crew I had at the house waiting. I think the wind slowed or stopped the tide from coming back in like it should have though. Also had lots of dropoffs, especially when the sun came out. I think we caught more babies yesterday than we did all last year though.

Dale,
Don't fall for Rod's tatcics. He wants someone to build his roller for him. [grin] It has something to do with that Outsmarting thing he mentioned earlier.[wink]
Beware, he's closer to you than he is to me.

Glad you got some Rod, I know how it is when the pressure is on to feed a hungry crowd. I was in the same general area Saturday morning but when I got to the place I got them the week before someone had already laid on half of what I planned so rather than go looking for something new I only let out 600' of chicken baited snoods and some rings to check it out. The first 300' of my line was all that was producing but it was fast action, by 8:00 I almost had a bu and the first half of my baits were GONE. I dragged the other half of the line into the productive zone and finished up and was de-baited by 9:30. I ended up culling everything under 6.5" - 7" and left with a solid basket of 7 - 8 inchers, not super heavy but nice crabs. I gave my neighbor about 18 of the smallest ones and he was impressed with the size of them[wink] I didn't have the heart to tell him they were the bottom of the basket.
I'm on vacation watchng my (rookie dipper) 9 year old nephue this week so I hope to hit it a couple times, tomorrow for sure. WB

Sorry for the delayed response, but I have been in Ocean City.....ahem...working????[grin]
Jerry.....now what would ever make you think I was referring to you, with my "outsmarting" comment?[grin][grin]
My equipment is great, I am making the snood line as more of a research project for the magazine...thats all.[wink]
Dale, Jerry's right...be careful you are just around the corner...the last time I tried to construct something, The fire department showed up[grin]
to everyone else....Thanks for the response!!
