My family and I were crabbing in Graysonville area Saturday and found that the public ramp on "goodhand road"???? had probably 200 dead crabs floating in the water. Most looked like #1's...

What a sad sight....

I've seen the refrigerated trucks pull up to the ramps from time to time in that area and buy directly from the commercial guys. My guess is that those were all crabs that had died on board a commercial vessel. Still sad, as you said, but not frightening since it likely isn't a mass "fish kill" incident.

And if you think that you're saddened by it, imagine how the guy that lost them feels.

Still a shame though.

They dump their thrashed crabs there always! Why they died is not the issue. That many shouldn't die if so someone needs to look into their methods. If they don't care at the very least take them home with you we really don't need to see or smell them

Makes me mad to think that these people are wasting crabs that I could have caught for my family...

And we wonder why the crabs are becoming smaller and smaller and harder to catch...

More then likley they were light crabs. That is why I cull my catch. Many large crabs in the Grasonville area were very light the past few weeks. I threw back about a bushel to a bushel and a half of paper shells over the past two weeks. They would never make it by the time I pull my line. Plus I wouldn't sell such a crab to my clients. Some will fill their baskets with just about any crab to make a full bushel.
