I want a 31/2 but dont really want to spend alot of money. This weekend I found the Mossberg 835 utility mag. This gun is fully camod and suprisingly light. Walmart has them for 290.00 wich is I think a good price. So does anybody have one or heard good or bad. Thanks in advance for your comments.

From what I have heard over the last 3-4 years since their introduction (Or however long it's been), very good gun especially for the money.
I have heard more than one report say that it is a legitimate 50 yard turkey gun, and able to be stretched to 60 in the right hands with the right choke and load.

I have been using mine for the past 10 years or so. I have carried it in Kansas for pheasants and quail, turkeys in WV, and here in MD and in Colorado for ducks and geese. It gets a bit heavy lugging it around the prairie for four days but it shoots pretty well and I haven't had it jam on me yet. I also got a rifled barrel at Cabelas in their bargain cave and with a scope it is a good deer gun as well. For my money I am very pleased with it. A lot of folks look down on Mossbergs, but again for the money they are hard to beat.

I have a 870 and love it what i really like about it are the possiblitys are endless for barrels accessorys ect. although my favorite for duck and goose hunting has got to be my super black eagle but that cost four time as much as the mossberg

I agree with mtgarman I have two mossberg 500 and have had one for ten yaers now and paid $100 for it. My dad sad it was a cheap gun when I bought it. And he was right. But my grand father told me the last time I took a turkey by his house "Son I bet you have killed a tractor trailer load of game with that d#m* pump gun havent you". I also have the rifled slug barrel topped with a Nikon straight 6 and like the man says for the money it is a great all around gun. I bought the second on because I thought the first one was worne out but I just needed a good cleaning.

The mossberg trophy slugster was the first real 150 yard slug gun when it was introduced, sold as a combo with the shot barrel it was unbeatable.
I currently shoot the Mossberg 695 bolt slug gun and would never think of shooting anything else. When shot using the Winchester Partition Golds, it is damn near the most accurate combo out there. According to the last side by side test I saw it was only beat out by the custom made Tar Hunt ($1000+). Groups were 1/4" smaller at 100yds.
Bottom line, mossberg makes a good gun.

They may make a nice gun but I will say without a doubt that Remington makes the easiest guns to take apart and clean. I have 3 870's in 12, 16 and 20ga and I can take them apart and put them back together in the same amount of time it would take someone to dismantle and reassemble a mossberg. I have never had a problem with any of my shotguns and hopefully never will. My 12 is an express magnum (shoots 2 3/4 and 3") and my father got it for $150 in the box. Look for deals. Go to gun shows.

I would go for the 870 Remington 3 1\2" .. You can find the Express model for the same cost of the 835 Moss. I have worn out one Moss. 500. replaced it with a 870 about 25 years ago.
I have never had one problem with it!!!
GO REMINGTON...

its a good gun and can handle most steel shot, but like any gun under a certian amount ,if you do alot of shooting you will ware it out, but most of us are seasonal shooters and i dont see a problem with the newer models of mossbergs you realy cant beat the price

This subject comes up at a good time for me because I am in the market for a new 3.5 pump. I've got two 870's and a 1187 that I am selling which are all in good shape, I just want to scale down the shotgun collection. I just want one shotgun. I've been looking at the 835 and the 3.5 870 and they both seem good and have their own little pluses. Any additional input from others is appreciated.

Some of you guys are comparing pumps and auto's. Just in case some of you assumed the 835 is a pump since it was so inexpensive??.
The 835 is an auto, 870 is not. Just so were all on the same page. I looked at the 835 a few years ago, heard they kicked like a mule(???), but for $300 YOU CAN'T GO WRONG..

i have to chime in. i have both guns. for me, as long as the gun shoots, i dont care. ive had them both for many years, and both have done just fine. the 835 had one problem with the firing pin, but i shipped to mossberg, and 3 days later it returned with a whole new pin assembly, and professionally cleaned. great customer service!
but, i do have one beef with my 835. the action release button is to the rear of the trigger. my fingers are big, and tend to push it in sometimes, and create a misfire when i get up to shoot.
the bonus to the 835, is that barrels are much cheaper than 870's.
just my opinions on the subject.

I still say Remington 870.. You can find parts, barrels etc.. new and used.. More so than Moss. parts are most times cheaper than
Moss. parts and easier to come by..
Go Remington...[excited]

go remington my son got his 3 1/2 super mag 870 express at a great price at walmart shame he only needs 2 3/4 shells, when the geese are in your face all the time you dont need the heavy artillery.

Eily Bird,
I had a Moss 835 Ulti-Mag for about 10 years. I killed several Turkeys with it and a lot of ducks. I had several problems with the gun. 1st, when I shot 3 1/2 turkey loads, the gun ejected the shell after the first shot and ofted double loaded or failed to feed. Second, when I shot ducks with 3" shells the weapon often wouldn't extract the shell and I had to pick out the shell with a pocket knife or a small screwdriver while birds were flaring and my friends were blasting away.
I bought a Benelli Nova pump gun last year, 28" Barrell, Max4 camo. ($370.00) The gun has performed magnificently. Great pattern with steel shot (modified choke) Easier to clean/Take apart than all of the weapons listed above because the bolt and carier are one piece, so you don't have those funky side plates you have to line-up. It is lighter so it kicks more, but you don't notice it in the duck blind and they do sell a mercury recoil reducer if you are so inclined.
That's my 2 cents on the mossberg, I've heard some people don't have any problems and others curse the name. Good Luck!
One of my hunting buddies shoots the 835, he's had it for 2 years now and has had no problems with it. It's a nice gun for the money. He does a lot of seaducken and it is nothing for him to shoot 3 boxes of shells thru it with no problems. I use to shoot a 9200 mossberg for all of my waterfowl hunting. Never had any problems with it either.

I have one...you want it.?. It used to shoot good, but now shoots about a foot low and a foot to the left. Cant hit schit with it. I went back to the 1100. Then bought a Charles Daly 3.5. Which was cheap( $495), all camo, has many interchangable parts with an 11-87, and feels good in hand. Shoots 3.5's great. Ive knocked turkeys stone dead at 65 yards. And it throws 00 buck (all 18) in a 20 inch circle at 60 yards.
I have heard the same thing about the mossberg barrels before and didnt believe it until it happened to me.
It may have been a freak, but who knows. It went from good to lousy quickly and have no clue why.

I gotta chime in on this one. Right now i own a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag, an H&K Camo Lion, and a Benelli Super Black Eagle. I recently got rid of an 870 and an 1187.
Believe it or not the 835 goes hunting with me more than any other gun. I've killed many turkeys, ducks, and geese with it and lately ive been wanting to get a slug barrel for it. The reciever on mine is already tapped and threaded for a scope base.
Guns are like anything else mechanical. You'll hear some say it's crap and others say it's great. I haven't had one problem with mine, it comes with a 10 year warranty, and IT'S CHEAP. I've had mine for probably 6 or 7 years with no problems at all.
My dad just bought the STOEGER M2000. It's not 3 1/2 but it's a hell of a gun at a decent price. According to the write-ups it's built like a benelli but it only costs $379. So far my dad hasn't had any problems, he just replaced his 1187 with that.
The toughest thing to get used to with a mossberg is the top safety switch, especially if you're a remington man.

Jimmy, go buy a buckstopper and a 30 inch barrel; Youll see it all you want. ( oh and I was mistaken. It wasnt 60 yards. It was 63 according to my laser range finder).
Dont forget your checkbook.
