96 Mer 40 Trim Problem

My trim stopped operating. When I press either of the two switches I hear just the top sylinoid click, but nothing happens everything seems tight and clean. Batter is charged? Anyone have any ideas, worked fine just 4 days ago?:confused:

check to see if you have power to And from the relay, if power to but not from relay,the relay is bad. if i had to guess there is a bad connection somewhere possibley close to the pump.. green wire is down, blue wire is up. check the grounds on the relays also because they ground through eachother. that would kill both sides at once. hope it makes sense, writing as i think.. just my .02

Thanks Capt. Kidd, I'll give that a shot. Everything looked tight but that does not mean it was getting a good ground I'll make sure everything is also clean. R/Chip

I have traced the power to the trim motor, I have power to the motor, both then I hit the trim down and up. Does that mean the motor is bad? I would think so, it just worked last week, no corrosion? It looks like I have to remove the motor from the boat to get the trim motor off? I've found motors online for anywhere from 250-300, wonder if the motor can be repaired? R/Chip.

* I drained the fluid from the cap and the pressure did not release from the motor, any ideas?

Try reversing the wires from the relay if motor is all way up or all the way down, this will let you know if the relays are good.

If you are getting power to the motor and the motor isnt at least humming or turning then i would say the pump is bad, although ive seen where people will go too far up and the pump will "bind up" and wont come back down. If it were mine i would take pump off and take to your local electric motor repairman that fixes starter, altenators and electric pumps. He should be able to fix it cheaper than replacing the entire unit

I cannot find the pressure release valve/screw? I've removed the yellow fill cap and that did not do it. There is only one other thing that has a slot in it for a screwdriver and it's on the right side with a c-clamp on it. It's a white nylon looking material, seems like there should be a screw on the ram but I cannot find one, unless it's on the back, concealed by the transom?

the nylon screw head is the manual release screw... be sure to use a screwdriver that fits properly so you dont booger it up.

I'll try that. It has a c/clip on it that looks like it will be hard to put back on but it might not be that bad. I've got to fix/replace the motor anyway so when it comes off I can put it back on. Maybe I can get it in the right place to use until I'm able to get repaired. Thanks for the info. I'll post how it turns out. R/Chip.

Can you not remove the whole hydrualic unit that the motor is attached. You have a large upper and lower pin that has those c clamps on either side. First put something under motor remove one of the upper c clamps and tap out pin. Now you can left the motor all the way up. Make sure its resting on something solid. Now remove the lower c clamp and tap out the pin and now the whole unit should slide out. You do need to unplug trim wires. THIS IS JUST A GUESS AND YOU SHOULD CONFIRM THIS WILL WORK AS IM GOING OFF A JOHNSON NOT A MERC.

Thanks for the tip. I wound up taking her to the shop yesterday. 325.00. Needed a new motor and the rest was labor. Ouch, that hurt. But I'll be fish'n this weekend!:yes:

Picked the boat up Friday afternoon. Had her in the water by 5, catching trout made the repairs worth it. 350.00 new trim motor. Works great but damn expensive. Thanks to all that tried to help. R/Chip.
