Professional Construction Manager, 24 years in the business. I was working for a reputable large GC in Washington. Ax came down to 30% of the work force on Friday. There is so little work out there, to say I'm concerned is an understatement. Anyway, if anyone has any side work, please let me know. I can do anything and have tools. Tile work, carpentry. laborer. I'll do anything to help pay the bills right now.

Best wishes to you Nick. Sounds like you have a good trade and will pick up work. I am in St.Louis and unemployment rate is really high however people with construction and building skills are doing better than the rest.

Guys, it's all across the economy. Came home last night to the news that my daughter lost her job as a professional recruiter. Fortunately she had held off buying a house and doesn't have to worry about a mortgage or supporting a child. I've been there, done that a couple of times in my career but it doesn't make it any easier. I guess we all have to tighten the belt and hope for the best. My daughter will land on her feet and I'm sure with a lot of effort will find something out there. Probably not so for a lot of other areas of the economy. Last market I would like to be in at this time is RE or construction. Good luck to you.

Nick- Can you send me your resume? My company is across the country, and international (we specialize in Military projects). I can check with corporate, and see if they are hiring... if nothing else, I can pass your resume along to them and see if something shakes out. Send me an email, and I will give you some more info on the company... Your ability and willingness to travel is a big bonus to the company. Are you willing to go international? Will you have any problems working on a Military installation??

I had a buddy who got laid off. It was bad news for him because he was in the process of buying his first house which fell through.

But, my suggestion would be to post your resume on places like monster and career builder. He did so and is getting plenty of interviews. He did a stint in facility maintenance for a short time and places like Verizon and Comcast were calling him to set up an interview to be installers.

He thinks he landed a job with the Redskins of all places. He says posting his resume on line was the best thing he ever did.

It's tough right now in construction and IMHO - not going to get better anytime soon.

Most years in January/Febuary - I work long days bidding work. This year I've bid about 10% of normal. There is very little work coming up in 2009 - that I see.

Good luck - be sure to ask around the neighborhood , often someone needs some handyman type work done.Tax money is coming back and some people will put it into their house projects.

Skip you are so right, my wife has been in the construction business for 25 years and her boss told her last week that they are going to cut her hours back to 32 a week I guess it's better than nothing. I wish you nothing but the best Nick I sure hope you find something.

I have a small concrete company for last 10 years. Was slow last year and this year is not looking any better. Have not worked since middle of december. If the price of gas stays the same as it is, will be fishing a lot like last year. Talking to others, it looks like this whole year could be a bust, hope not. Good luck to every one who is out of work.

It sucks to be in construction right now. Our work is way down. Iv'e been in business for myself over twenty years
Last year, we had two to three jobs going at one time sometimes four. The sad thing is, there's still alot of work out
there, but to get it your'e bidding against more contractors and alot of these guys don't know what ther'e doing.
Alot of homeowners are looking for someone to do handyman work. Maybe pay for a cheap add in a local paper
for a few months and see what happens. Good luck.

Handyman work pays well, I bill my guys out at 65.00 an hour . We do have a lic. and insurance but Im sure you'll be ok without them for a short time.
