I rarely fish freshwater, but I have an opportunity to fish my father-in-law's lake on the Virginia Norther Neck this Sunday. The lake is small (maybe 300 acres?) but deep (up to 40-feet w/lots of sharp drop-offs). The water is typically quite clear and the only vegitation consists of some small lilly pad fields near shore.

I want to keep this simple. What works best in early Fall? A diving crank bait? Thanks for any tips!

the colder the water gets the slower your retrieve needs to be. Popper should be ok... just work it slow.

Plastic worms should be fine. same with crank baits.

If its really cold... then try to get deeper and slower. That will be the key.

best of luck!!

lack of vegetation on the bottom is good habitat for the finesse worms & shaky head set up.
