The chickahominy WMA has a ramp on Morris creek. A couple hundred yards upstream you will see all the gar you could hope for. Decent bass fishing up there too.

Have you guys ever had success catching these gar on hook and line? Lures? Bait? Top water? Spinner baits?

Rod Bender, yeah, there is a pretty deep channel running through Morris, at least up to the ramp. If you're coming in from the main river, don't cut across the middle of the mouth, it's a huge mud flat. Stay to the left bank going in.

As you go downriver from Jordan Point you will pass a string of small islands to your right. Tar bay is on the other side of those islands. Enter it from the downriver side of the furthest island. There is a small channel through there, but be carefull. There are lots of very shallow areas and some posts and submerged logs and wood in there. I have never entered or exited from the Jordan point side of Tar bay for this reason, but I have heard some say they have. Better safe than sorry so I go in and out from downriver.
