Radar suggestions

How about some suggestions on types/styles/brands of radar? I have never had radar and I am looking for a set up that is reasonably priced and user friendly.

Here is a good place to start looking.
It really depends on what you want or need
and how much you want to spend. Unless
you are a do-it-yourselfer, add another $500
to $1000 for installation.

I bought and installed my own 4kw Lowrance radome with LCX-28 monitor/screen. I like it but there were 2 or 3 glitches with the installation (ie, key steps left out of the installation manual and software upgrade had to be emailed to me). Also, there is currently a glitch with the radar shutting off if it senses less than 14 volts in the power supply, which is a royal pain in the butt. I need to call their tech support back about it. When you install this thing, there are 4 (FOUR!!!!) power supply wires, each with a fuse.

When it works, it works well. In hindsight, I probably would've bought a similarly priced black and white furuno. I got this one because I just had to have a color monitor (for my price range). Black and white would have been good enough.

I will say this too: Lowrance's tech support guys were VERY helpful on the phone. They were very patient and I felt like I was talking to people who had already experienced the pain I was experiencing. They were familiar with each and every step.

My boat's 24-25 ft and I've had it out to the canyon and/or gulf stream 7 times this year. The radar is NOT helpful on my boat in rough seas, but it is VERY USEFUL in relatively calm seas when it is pitch dark, foggy, or in N.C., "smoky".
