View Full Version : Capt. Bruce's Topless Traps
Dragging Baits

I made my purchase from Capt. Bruce of 30 large traps and when I sent my order in, he sent me a note back suggesting that I add more bait springs to each trap and said that he has gotten three at a time before. While I kinda didn't really believe him but did agree on the more bait theory, I went out with my three year old this afternoon and three different times we pulled traps with three BIG keeper males. I couldn't believe it. His traps are absolutley of high qualiy and they do catch crabs. It doesn't take long to get a good meal when you get them three at a time. My hats off to Capt. Bruce and the quality traps he sells here.
PS. Get at least three bait springs

Where do you attach the other baits, to the floor or the sides. I have thought about doing that.

The traps that you get from Capt. Bruce can be ordered with additional bait springs which is what he suggested and what I did. The additional springs get spread out on teh floor of the trap. I ordered the bigger traps of the two sizes he sells and three baits fit nicely inside the trap and three fat jimmies fit even better. I got his website from someone here on TF. I'm sure if you did a search of "capt. Bruce", it would show up.

Jose, just sent you a pm with Capt. Bruce's site. I ordered some the other day. Looks like it will take 3 - 4 weeks before they are ready. Looking forward to trying them out.

bone,
I have several of the large traps. I removed the springs and repaced them with 3 Jimmie clips spread at different angles on the bottom. Bruce isn't exagerating, I've had many two crab pull ups. Still waiting for three. The wire guage is a little lighter than a foxy mate trap but still strong. The lighter guage makes for easier pulling. I have 10 more on order.
Good luck,
Lig

Is there a size limit on traps that can be used in the Chesapeake, if you are not a commercial fishermen?

the bottom footprint of the trap can be no more than 12" x 12" I believe capt bruces "bigfoot" traps are the largest allowable

3 big jimmies per trap?? :beergood: dude, drinking and boating are illegal in this state...i've heard of seeing double, but aren't you stretching it a bit?? ;-)
Ready to test out that new trotline this weekend? it ain't catching you any crabs in the bucket...

I like the traps and I have joined the 3 at a time club. Two were keeper's while one went back. I have 17 of them and they seem to be holding up well. I have a mix of small and big one's. Powder

Hey Rod, I know, I know. But I'm telling you Braeden and I got a dozen of 5 1/2 plus crabs in less than an hour and they all came from just a few of the 15 traps I set. The three pulls that yielded the three keepers absolutley blew me away. I know you have to be in the right spot but Capt. Bruce was absolutely right about the additional bait springs and that you can catch multiple crabs at a time. I threw back at least two dozen crabs that were close but not 5 1/2 plus. The dozen I kept fed Braeden and I and I still made two crab cakes with what was left. I am hoping to try out Capt. Dales trot line Sun. but the traps are really the ticket after work and school with limited prep time. I really like the bigger traps as well and think that they make a difference in being able to have enough room to get multiple crabs in there.
