I had the opportunity to fish with Jamie Johnson (RACN35) on a trip he was fortunate enough to win. We went to Smith Mountain Lake to meet up with our Guides Todd and James. Neither of us have tried this type of fishing before and to be honest we didnt know what to expect. I think we both were a little tenative at first. we load gear and go out on the lake its 90 degrees out with 83 water termp and the water is very clear.

Arrive at the first spot and no luck, move on to another location where Jamie got his grappling cherry popped with a nice 15lb flathead. Its a shock the first time one of these bruisers hits you hard. Next up my turn checked a couple of spots that were empty and then jackpot found an angry fish who was not happy with me intruding into his territory and I get hammered hard but was able to grasp it and hold on for my first ever flathead catfish a nice 15 lbr.

Jamie follows up with another around same then we move to another spot where Jamie get bit several times by the biggest fish of the day easily over 30 lbs but when wrestled out into open water it wanted none of us and escaped before we could get a photo. we found several spots where fish were there but we couldnt reach them. I was up next and caught a nice 19 lber and after a quick photo op returned the fish to its home.

we go back up into a very shallow creek and find our next spot and as soon as todd stepped in front of the hole it bit him hard on the shinand nearly knocked him over. Jamie jumped in and with the help of Todd and James was able to get a good 26.1 pounder out of a deep hole.

Im up next with a 22lber that was the biggest fish i would catch on the day.

we went on to a few other spots where we caught several more fish in the 15-22lb range before calling it a day around 6pm and driving back completely exhausted, but stoked with memories we wont soon forget.

Smith Mountain is a beautiful lake and these guys Todd and James really know there stuff. so if you want to try something exiting an new give them a shout you will not be dissapointed. Jamie can post their contact info as I dont have it with me.

ALL FISH WERE RELEASED TO FIGHT AGAIN ANOTHER DAY

Great Photos! By the way, if your reading this Todd, I went by Jordan Point and looked for your glasses. Either they were gone or I was looking at the wrong posts. Sorry man.
