Tuesday - my friend Steve and I fished a section of the Chickahominy River not too far from where it merges with the James. Plenty of action but nothing very big. We caught half a dozen largemouth, a blue cat (on a crankbait) and lots of white perch and bream. Someone had trot lines tied to almost every branch and stump along the mile or two we fished. Must be a big fish fry coming up - catfish anyone?

Did you fish the main river or the creeks like Morris creek?

I can't honestly tell you. Sorry to say. From the main bridge at the mouth we went down the left hand branch from the public ramp.

Fishpirate - personally I release all catfish I catch - never been a big fan, especially when it comes from the James or tributaries. The one we caught was even smaller than those dink bass so it wasn't worth the trouble. The guy I was fishing with (his boat - so his call) likes to eat the bass - I haven't eaten freshwater fish in a long time. I've been a C&R bass fisherman for 30 years BUT don't give a (*^ what any (*&^ pro, PETA or anyone else thinks or does. Because of my fish printing art someone ALWAYS has something to whine at me about. Save it for the guys with the nets, longlines and explosives. If I catch it with a hook, it's legal and I like to eat it - I'LL RELEASE in the GREASE every time.

I accidently caught a 3lber (LMB) in my cast net last winter. Must admit, I ate it and loved it.
BTW....Anyone catching big cats now. I can't seem to find them. I am using my wintertime approach of fishing deep holes and structure during the day.

Maybe if more folks would keep the 1-3lb bass there would be more trophies out there.

Not a big fan of eating LMB. Used to fish farm ponds as a kid with my granddad, and we kept what we caught and would fry them up that night, and the bass never did taste as good as a bluegill or catfish.

This maybe a good reason not to keep bass from the Chick.

The reason for the restocking effort was due to VDGIF data and angler reports of a near collapse of the largemouth bass fishery in the Chickahominy River. The Chick and other tidal Virginia rivers suffered during the three-year drought period of 2000-2002. As a result of saltwater intrusion, there was no recruitment of largemouth bass into the adult populations. In effect, there were three year class failures in a row. The restocking effort will accompany the successful year classes of 2003 and 2004 and hopefully restore the Chickahominy River to what it once was - one of the best tidal river bass fisheries in the country. Greenlea thinks the stocked bass will reach 12" by next fall.

Shoot, the Chick river is on fire for bass for the past 2 years....MUCH better than the James.

I ate some bass my sisters fiance kept out of the family lake a couple months ago. Tasted like bull frog skin. Not nearly good as young blue cat, hybrid striper or white perch.

Last one I ate tasted like old striper seasoned with algae and dirt. Flounder season re-opens in a few days.

Never ate dog that I know of.I's best to eat the bass in fall and winter along with most fresh water fish imo.
