Fished Masseys on thur, 6/26 - - much better weather-wise than forecasted, fog in the am, which cleared off about 10 miles out - flat calm till about 12:00, and then picked up around 1:00 or 1:30 when we headed in.
Trolled the lump, ending up 2/3 BFT (lost one at the boat), one barely over and one under - about 30 lbs and 60 lbs, as well as a nice gaffer and only one bluefish. All bites were before about 10:00 or so. BFT took both a daisey chain, as well as WWWB hoo on a bird.
Great first trip of the year - - had hoped for a bigger fish, but more than happy to have tuna in the box!

Great 1st day out, congrads on the BFT.
You run a bird on your WWWB? I would think that keeps the bait up high on the surface, We get our best fish a little deeper.

good job on the 60#, I tried to call you on 72 to see how you were hitting them... The bite was on there for about an hour or so. We were hooked up right next to you & we landed our only tuna, small 20#er on a GM daisy chain, you were fighting a fish at the same time, I think it was the one you lost. We had three other knock downs on single GM's & a solid hookup on the WWWB bird GM combo. That fish spit the hook before we could reach the rod. We also hooked up with a nice mahi that flipped off the gaff at boat side. A local capt we know hit 8 on the day.
We also hit a bluefish, about a 2#er on a feather at the 20 fathom line. I never saw a blue that small that far offshore....

hedjug - Glad to hear you picked up some meat as well. We had the radio on, but it is tough to hear alot of time - sorry we missed you.
How did you fare on the way home? Bit snotty, huh? We started the troll towards home around 1:00 or so, and just took our time getting there. Did you mark fish or bait? We marked very very little. So much that we were thinking of heading to the hambone, but then started getting bites so we stuck around. Both of the ones we caught were stuffed full of sand worms.
Sure was nice to break the ice.

We trolled parrallel to you most of the way home, only picked up that one bluefish. We were pulling lines when we saw you stop, is that when you hooked up with the 60? It was a snotty ride in... musta been reel fun for you boys in that open boat.
We didn't mark one fish at Masseys, we spent the first hour or so working the canyon walls with zero marks. Then we came up on the lump & hooked up asap. Zero marks, temp breaks or thermoclines. We did mark fish trolling back in around the 20 line.
T. Tuna, thanks for that tip... I am not out there enough to think like that.

That was actually the one that got off - - felt like a decent fish, definitely a BFT, but not an over. Angler era on that one. Had a newbie on the rod, he reeled the swivel into the rod tip, then the fish made a run - - pop!
We certainly did get a little wet - - but wouldn't have traded it for a day in the office.

I ran meat on everything, except a pink daisey chain (which caught one of the BFT) and a cedar plug, both on the flat lines.
As predicted, picked up the bigger BFT on a WWB skirted hoo.

We didn't run any meat due to the many reports of chopper blues in the area. Our only tuna came on a naked green machine daisy chain & all of the other hits came on solo green manchines, one hit on the bird/GM. Saw no choppers blues, so meat would have helped....
Nothing on the rainbow spreader bar or the cedar plug, the moment I pulled the rainbow speader & put out a red/black jet we hooked up with the mahi.
