I am interested in enclosing my backyard in a vinyl type fence (not ruling out other types). I have seen some that have slats/pickets that alternate sides of the rails thereby giving privacy but allowing wind to pass through. I have a 6 month old lab that I want to contain so it needs to be 5 feet tall I would guess. Any recommendations on a manufacturer I should consider. I can install myself or have it installed, I'm in the Richmond metro area. Anything I should consider or other types of fencing. I'm just starting to research this.

Both Lowes and Home Depot carry a line of decent vinyl fence. It is easily installed by someone with reasonable skills but isn't cheap.
Wood is still the least expensive way to go.
If your main reason for the fence is the pup, have you considered the "invisible" type?

If you're going to place post in the ground for your fence call "call before you dig" (power company) so they can mark (for free) where pipes and wires are running thru.

3 rail split rail fence with roll fencing stapled to it has worked for me.
It has contained my rottweiler for years.

I had a white vinyl fence put in when I built my house 3 years ago. MINOR'S Fencing in Ashland did mine. Picket 4' has keep 4 dogs in but hear the newest addition(Border Collie) might chllenge that. One thing I did diferrent was wood along the back line, since only I would be seeing that part of the fence. Was pricey but worth it, considering the condition of my wooden fence at the last house.
Any questions or need any more help let me know. I am in King William.

If you just want it for the dog, then I would recommend either a wireless or underground wire type dog fence. We just purchased the underground wire type for my wirehaired pointer.and I was shocked how quickly he learned. Since our back yard is wooded, I didn't bury the line.....kinda raked the leaves aside w/ my foot and ran the wire about 2' inside the treeline...installed in one afternoon.
