FOGGY BLUEFIN @ The Poormans

:rockingreport: FOUND The Bluefin Today, had them all to ourselves. Ran to the Poormans out of OC and had lines in the water at 9:00am. Trolled South along 100 Fathom line in 69 degrees. Had GTF (Grady) and his two Turkeys( Alex and Miles) with me. First trip for Grady's kids Miles (3) and Alex (5). Perfect conditions except for the Wall to Wall Fog. Fog on the way out, all day long and on the way back. Actually, wasn't to bad as the fog kept things cool. Apparently, we were the only ones at the Poormans as the only thing showing up on Radar were a few high flyers that we ran past.

First hook up was at 9:30 just South of Poormans in about 120 fathoms. Grady managed to bring a 32" Bluefin to the boat & I wired it into the cockpit for a measurement. After a quick measurement it went right into the box. Had a second knock down while checking the fish and it got snaged on another rod and broke off a 130lb leader.

We hit to MOB and ran back through and picked up 2 more schoolies which unfortunately we had toss back due to the regs. Continued to troll south into 70+ water, looking for bigger fish and ran past lots of trash in the water but couldn't pick up anything off of it. Turn back North and ran back to the cooler water at the Poormans and picked up a Triple header at about the same place as the first hits, around 1pm in 69 degree water. As it was really just Grady and I we left one in the rod holder and brought in and released 2 more schoolies after a mad dance in the cockpit. I then brought in the last schoolie and managed to leader it before it made another run and got cut off in the prop.

We could have probably kept running through them a couple of more times but Grady's boys were wearing a bit thin and we decided to call it a day and run back in to OC. I would make another stab it tomorrow but I had a break down in the Port engine about 28 miles out, at least we didn' run out of refreshments on the way in.

Yep; the first one is easy to tell that is over 27. Its the next one where it gets fun as it usually 46.5". Loads of fun getting a measurement and then tossing it back when the one you iced was 28 to 32".

It was hot almost all of the way out 70-71 degrees. Around the 50 Fathom it dropped to 68 and then began climbing until we hit the 100 Fathom line where it was 69.8 and that is the water we found the Tuna. They were on the South Side of Poormans with 71 degree water just south of where we picked them up.

The water was pretty green and only blued up a little as we approached the 100 Fathom line. Never got a nice blue. There was lots of trash in the water a few boards, some spotty weed and a few scum lines but nothing produced.

Kllunatic - I greatly appreciate the report of BFTs near Poorman's. I got up today at 4AM to chase the ocean aimlessly for tuna - like many others - and saw your 11PM report, so I took it to the boat, and we decided that Poormans was as good as any shot that we had. We arrived in Poorman's at 0730 to find water at only 65 degrees so we turned on the 150 fathom line towards the south. After 3-4 miles with water warming only slightly, we decided to give your spot a shot. The first line out was our pink bird/green machine, and it just kept on going, with a 31" bft, which we killed. We stayed on that spot for a few more and continued on towards the Washington running 90-150 fathoms. We found school after school of bft, all 28-33", and threw back the other 17 or so. They hit eveything that we had, except the deep planer, because they were all on top, although the bird/green weenie way back and the gay pride spreader bar with pink witch w/hoo just off the transom each got multiple fish. Just outside the Washington, we called any interested boats, and several came over and hooked up, one with a five-banger (that must have been a fire drill!) and after we left, one boat reportedly caught a couple of yft out of it. Anyway, I'll let David, capt of "Reel Buster" make his own report of our trip, but thanks for one of the best tips that I've had in a long time! And sorry about your engine - hope it was nothing major. Must have been a little bit of concern with those two little tuna fisherman on board. Thanks again ever so much.:clap::clap:

Thanks again having us up for the weekend and for taking us offshore. My boys have wanted to go catch a "big tuna" with Dad for a while. It's great the Klunatic was one of first boats catch bluefin out of OC this season...just like last year! I will be stocking up on the secret bait before our next trip.

It was a different kind of trip with the little guys on board, thanks for your patience.

Was lots of fun having the boys out on the boat. I always enjoy taking someone out for the first time and being able to get on the fish. Hopefully it was just a U-joint in the drive. I'll let you know as soon as I get a chance to pull it apart.

Let me know if you have anything brewing later in the month out of Rudee. That bait was the ticket wasn't it.

Great Trip! Glad that you guys where able to get on the fish. 18 fish is a nice workout. Hopefully, the big ones aren't far behind. :thumbup:

It probably was us at the West OC ramp, Decided to pull the boat instead of limping back to the slip up town. Hope to get it fixed and back in the water ASAP.
