Anyone point me to a Merc-Quicksilver mechanic? This is a 1989 or there'bouts. The motor is a 45HP "Classic 50"..
Ignition key switch in shifter housing is shot..
I have used Chesapeak Whalertown, but trying for more local service..
I am in howard county. I think it is a pretty straightforward job (not for me).
Help to keep the BK alive another year...quick..

I don't know about Merc, but my grandson recently bought a switch to fit the control box for an older Evinrude. I was surprised at the price, $17.00 at Boaters World. He is not particularly the most mechanically inclined, but installed and had it working in a couple of hours. Surely it was not an OMC replacement, probably a Sierra product which are sold at many marine supply places.
Might be worth a try.

I put one in my boat last year. less than 5 minutes. very straightforward.

West Marine, replacement switch with screw terminals.., Mercury manual (bought back in 2003) had wire diagram..
About 45 minuts and all is well switch sticks out about 2 inches more than original, I can live with that!

If it bothers you enough, usually, the protrusion can be adjusted by an extra nut closest to the switch body---not the one on the keyhole end. The inner nut is run out to set the depth of the keyhole, then the outer nut goes on to tighten the assembly in the houseing.
Minor problem, and personaly, I would not go back into the box to change it!!:rolleyes:
