I just installed and trialed my new GARMIN 545s with sonar and the G2 Vision chip for Maine to Florida and out to the Bahamas.

Its EXCELLENT. Thats all I can say.

One easy to use , nice addition.

I'd love to hear more detail on this unit because im considering the same unit.

I know nothing about these at all and trying to do some research on GPS/Chartplotters before making my decision.

Only drawback i saw was that it wont accept any other map chips (according to the guy at west marine).
Just whats pre0installed and G2 chip.

Is that correct??

If thats true ........... is there better mapchips out there (for the bay) than whats installed in the 545s?

The new technology has come along way!!
Last FF ive been using was purchased in the mid 80's but my new boat has a lowrance X-25 which is also dated i believe.

Doing a little research i found some real good videos on the garmin units.

I'd still like to hear some user opinions here.

I don't think you will get any better gps/chartplotter then Garmin. I installed a 4208 this spring. They don't accept any other map chips but I don't know why you would need any. The preloaded charts are very good and if you add the extra functions included with the G2 they are awesome. I had a Furuno gps/chartplotter and the main reason I replaced it, besides the brightness of the screen, was so I didn't have to have 6 different chips to cover the area I fish.

I have the 545s and love the gps but still trying to sort out the sonar.Anybody have good experience in fine tuning the sonar to be effective?I'm not sure what I'm looking at and so far having trouble determining whether I'm on fish, debris, echos.Any help will be appreciated.
