I picked up a furuno 1650 gps/ff off craigslist. I downloaded the operators manual from the furuno website, but the installation guide is not posted. My only question has to do the the power cable. The cable is shielded with two wires, one white and one black. The plug that attaches into the back of the unit has three pins, with a legend molded into the back of the case. The black wire is positive, the white in negative and the 3rd pin is for a ground. The shielded braid is used to create the ground.

My question is where does the ground attach? Does it attach to the body of a thru-hull fitting, attached to the t-top post or to a negative terminal -- or is it not used?. My guess is this ground is needed to reduce interference. Right now I have only the black and white wires connected -- and the unit seems to be working okay. But I haven't had the unit turned on while running the motor.

Thanks!!!

I have a 582L. I didn’t have any interface problems so I just left the shield unterminated

I have a 1650df & do not have the shield connected to anything, & mine also works fine. I have the install manual, but it is at my place in Virginia. I can look up the exact instructions the next time I go there
