Garmin Transducer Help

I had a Garmin 498 on my last boat so I ordered another one because it fit nicely in budget. It did not come with a transducer so I had to order separately.

I ordered a 010-10192-01 transducer because it featured 200/50, speed and temp. It has 12/45 degree cones respectfully.
When it arrived I was shocked at the size of the transducer!!! :eek2:

It is at least 3 or 4 times the size of the old one I had on my old boat.

compared to: 010-10106-00 which is 200 only with a 20 degree cone.

Has anyone installed the 010-10192-01? Does it have exceptional quality or something? Is that the reason for its size? If its just a great transducer I will put it in.....

Whats your opinion of what transducer to use - (I stay in the bay)

You don't need the 50 in the bay.That is used most times for water over 200 feet deep.It will not show much detail in shallow water.

My 200 reads bottom fine to 130 feet in the bay- she does not get much deeper.Even the 160 foot hole off Bloody is clear.

If the 200 is cheaper-you might want to send the dual one back- if they will accept it.Some electronic items are non returnable.

I'm not familiar with the Garmin transducer part numbers but most likely it’s an Airmar P66 which is a great transducer.

The larger size is to accommodate the larger size crystasl required to produce the 50 kHz signal. While 50 kHz is not needed in the Bay it does give you a considerably larger window to the world below. In 50’ of water 200 kHz is only showing you an area roughly 10’ in diameter as opposed to 50 kHz which gives you roughly a 40’ diameter view.

I run split screen 50/200 kHz quite often when trolling or looking for structure out in open water just to increase my coverage. The picture in 50kHz isn't as good but that's why I have 200kHz as well.

FYI: Airmar is the OEM for the transducers in question so you might as well go to the source. Not only do they have a lot of good technical information on their website but they also offer a wider range of transducers for your unit than Garmin offers.
