Hi Blue,

If you google earth your vacation home you will see ocean to the east and the Currituck sound to the west with about 1/4 mile strip of land or less that you'll be on. The sound side is your best best however I caution you that the sound is very shallow west of duck. It is also about three miles across to the mainland. So..I suggest you fish the Wright Memorial Bridge with your center console. Use light spinning gear and try casting to the concrete pilings under the bridge with a green holographic 4 or 6" tsunami shad. Let it sink nearly to the bottom before retrieving. You could also troll rattletraps or stretch 11's. Best of all, pick up a bottom rig and some blood worms or squid and catch some croakers then drop the croakers down along the pilings for the rockfish. There is a terrific boat ramp on the mainland side just north of the bridge. Its a county park with restroom facilities also. There is plenty of water north and south of the bridge and beautiful boating toward the mouth of the Albemarle Sound (SW)for a fun boat ride. Speckled Trout an puppy drum are also prevalent in the grass marshes and around the islands. Watch the skinny water north though. Good luck!!!

When you say grass marshes and islands are you referring to the ones north of the bridge?

yes...a couple miles north of the currituck bridge(wright Memorial)...since he was asking about the duck area..there are better places to fish from a kayak though..farther south around the pirates cove bridge..john's creek..know where it is?

I have an idea of where John's creek is although I have not paddled into it. I've stayed in the duck area several times but I didn't realize the specks and pups made it up that far. Sorry to hi jack the thread but I was very interested in the info about the pups and specks being that far north.

Capt. Bryan Dehart, a lifelong Roanoke native and very respected sound/backwater guide will be doing a semeinar at the Hilton Garden Inn 3/29..all day..it will be invaluable to anyone fishing Currituck, Roanoke, Croatan, Albemarle and/or the Pamlico sounds. He has been featured on ESPN2 and Carolina Outdoor Journal TV as well as NC Sportsman..on many occasions..he will project a chart on a large screen and as part of his preesentation he will give DETAILed overview of where and when to fish(as he did in our Nov. OBXROCKFISHING SEMINAR)...bring a chart to mark up! There is nowhere else to get this information unless you rewind your life and live in his shoes!!! He and Capt Dave Rohde will cover backwater boat, fly, wading and Ric Burnley will cover kayaking..sorry to be a broken record but this will be some great talent going in=depth....no pun intended! This is truly a must if you like to trout, flounder, red fish in ther sounds.....Outer Banks Fishing School (http://www.obxfishingschool.com)

the pups and specs make it all the way up into the northwest river when rainfalls are light like they have been. They catch puppy drum on grass beds all the way up to northlanding bridge which is just a few miles into virginia. All these fish come through the narrows.A god map will show you where i am talking about. You asked about duck and the narrows are your best bet from duck. There are plenty of places to use your kayak or your center console throughout the outerbanks with many creeks and pinchpoints with deeper holes. The narrows funnel all water that moves with the wind through and in between these marsh islands.if we were deer hunting this would be called a big buck pinch point. The current cuts out these areas creating nice holes for migrating fish to stop and forage as well as just chill out in.Millions of pounnds of flounder are caught 8 to 10 miles north of this area by pound netters, as well as, drum, stripers, spot, croakers, bluefish, black drum, speckle and grey trout. The days you are coming will be excellent fishing in the narrow area for all these species whether you are using cut bait ,live bait, or artificials.Storms, bucktails, rattle traps, gotcha plugs (sometimes), spoons, cut menhaden, shrimp, squid, mullet, gudgeons will all work on almost all species this time of year. That area is the most under utilized fisherie in currtiuck and dare county. Most locals will never tell you that the even fish in that area and most will tell you it is to shallow to catch a fish in the sound to deter you from fishing there.

i hope this helps ya and if you want some other areas to try all the areas mentioned above are also great areas and worth a trip to.Green island slough can be awesome but is usually better in the fall.Speckle trout are better down towards new river inlet and have been for several years in the spring.Wancheese has numerous back creeks and islands and holes that can be very productive any time of year for different species. north river is an awesome weedless spoon fisherie for trout, puppy drum, and flounder and are still being caught there right now due to warm water temps and heavy salt content due to lack of rain.So pick an area and try to find them you should be able to catch just about anything you want to in any of these areas with a little homework.Call me when you get ready to come down and I will give you the latest and best advice abou where the hottest bite is.252-207-6938
