Anybody been to Grand Cayman?

Hello!

It's been a looooong time since I've had a reason to post. Hope everyone is well.

I was wondering if anyone has had occasion to fish Grand Cayman. My wife and I will be visiting in early March and staying in Bodden Town for a few days. I'm bringing the fly rod with me so I can try to get skunked by bonefish... never fished for them before.

Anyhow, thought I'd throw the line out there to see if anyone could offer any helpful advice.

Hey Grizzly, haven't been to the Grand Caymans but have fished the Keys and to chase bonefish you are going to want to have an 8 weight. Some may think that's heavy but if you are bringing only one rod it will give you chances for cuda and snappers. Definetly a floating line and if you have an intermediate bring that as well. Leaders should be 9' and down to 8lb. but have some 10 and 12lb as well. Have some wire for the toothies as well. Flies, crazy charlies in tan, yellow etc. Clousers, Decievers etc. I hope that this is helpful and have a great time.:thumbup:

I visited Grand Cayman in the late 80's. While I didn't fish for bonefish I did go out for marlin. I think the bonefishing is much better on Little Cayman Island and Cayman Brac. Offshore at Grand Cayman is less than 1/4 mile from the beach. Doesn't leave much room for flats fishing. You can actually sit on 7 mile beach and watch the offshore boats fish for marlin. We did see some mid-range size tarpon at night swimming through the lights at Chef Tells. Be prepared for the outrageous price of food. It cost 2 of us close to 30 dollars to eat an average meal at wendy's. I won't scare you and tell you what it cost to eat at a sit down restaurant. Good luck!

I remember seeing something about the inland creeks that discharge into the island's surrounding water as having baby tarpon. Guys were flyfishing for them right off the sides of the roads. We stayed at Morritt's Tortuga Club on the opposite side of the Island away from 7-Mile beach. EXCELLENT snorkleing right there.

I have not fished in grand cayman but did in little cayman for a week last year-pretty cool.you might want to check reel time saltwater fly forum-carribean and south america section. There are lots of threads on grand cayman. if you want more little cayman info pm me.

I'll be toting the 4pc 8wt with wulff WFF on a tioga reel. My fly box will be loaded with clousers, crazy charlies, the necessity, and others. I'll be looking for targets of opportunity... hopefully we'll find something that's hungry. I'm being pretty casual about it since fishing isn't the primary focus this time.
