Most of the major window manufacturers also make replacement windows

Anderson,Pella,Marvin & there are many others.

most can be ordered in custom sizes or purchased in the most common stock sizes from your local home center or lumber/building supply store
or a visit to the manufacturers website will also provive you with some local contacts.

I like my Andersons , but there are many good brands out there

Thompson Creek Windows! I had them installed in my last home and they were top quality. They fit so much better than my neighbors who had another company do theirs. When I replace the windows in my new home (hopefully by next fall) I will be using them again.

The president is a member here, a fantastic fisherman on the bay(won last years Boat Yard tourney and a few ASA stops in the past), and a good dude. His board name is ThreeVs. Give him a look!

Here is his profile: http://www.tidalfish.com/forums/members/three-vs.html

One thing to look for is the fit.
Too much play when the sash is close and locked and cold air will get in when the blower (AC or heat) goes on in the house or a door opens on the other side.
A small sample of the window you pick is NOT a good way to determin "a good window" Try to have them bring you as big a window or as close in size to yours (same model)and check. The thicker the area in the center of the glass the better the insulation factor. There is glass with UV protection (more expensive) but good idea for the South side, good on rugs, furnisher drapes and alike.

I second the Simington windows.
I've installed a bunch, and never had any complaints.
great window for the price.
you don't want to go with the lowest bidder, get what you pay for.

Dreamhousewindows.com Terry is the owner of maryland and will give all Tf members an additional 10% off his lowest prices.

They are the Manufacturer (NO MIDDLEMAN) so its all custom to meet your needs, they can add as many featrures as you need. His windows are backed with the good house keeping seal, installed with his factory trained tech's and come with a unconditional liftime warranty including labor!!! the warranties are transferrable also so its 1 additional feature if you ever sell your home.

Replacement windows are only as good as their installation. I was on a complaint call last week from one of the best replacement windows made in the entire country. Customer had 3 grand to spend... that was it... no more... He bought great windows but the installer was the worst... installed 12 in 4 hours including metal wrapping. I'm sorry that just isn't possible.

He originally had Andersen windows that could have been upgraded to 400 series tilt in backed by a 20 year warrenty but no one ever told him of the option. So now the installer will give him back all his 3 grand when he returns the windows... he no longer can go Andersen because they butchered his frames and the next nearest replacement window will cost him double... which he doesn't have. I truely felt sorry for him, but stupid hurts.

On another window note... was on a job yesterday. New house, windows and doors are not operating well, customer claims they are all defective. Meet with Mrs. Homeowner and show her the installation instructions that were included with everyone of her 62 windows and 7 doors. When I left she was in one of those pathetic sputtering convulsive hysterical fits rarely seen beyond age 2... everyone was installed incorrectly. God help her husband.... he's GCing the job.

U are 100% right about the installation!!!!! Its not hard to take a great window and turn the job into an abortion if you don't have a good installer. The medium size companies Like my friends (Dream House) His window installers only install windows 6 days a week. you get the best of the best. other companies you get jack of all trades and master of none! or even worse, a subcontractor. large companies these days sub everything out to avoid liability. Trust Me, I use to manage a large company for over 5 years.

Not a pitch for work since we are in VA anyways but the Anderson Woodwright replacement is a top of the line window that can be ordered in 1/4" increments. Same window as the top line Anderson 400 series. Window is all wood on the inside/fibrex outside and looks like a new construction installation. choice of wood species/finish/grill style and/hardware style and finish. This window is the bomb for anyone that is willing to spend the money and prefer's an allwood window interior as opposed to vinyl

Woodwrights are really nice but at around $800 a window you'll never save enough in energy to justify them. And their rebate of $250 if you buy 7 is nothing more then a joke.

Woodwright has the same basic problem all replacement windows have.... they are only as good as their installer. Just recently had to proove that to a homeowner, not one thing was wrong with the product, and had it been installed per Andersens instructions there would be no issues. I'm not sure she understood because it was difficult to understand the convulsive blubbering hysterical fit she was having while screaming "but I spent 20 thousand dollars...."

CSLUG, got to agree with you, quality installation is everything. of course same is true of almost everything. drywall, trim, plumbing, roof shingles, swimming pool, prop shaft......
