Fly Fishing Around Mobjack and North River

Anyone have any experience fly fishing around Mobjack or the North River? I just bought a place on the North at the Edge of Mobjack and looking to learn the area.

I have fished Mobjack a few times in My Boston Whaler Katama but never did well. Realized its a huge piece of water with many possibilities, too many for me to figure out. My sister in law has a property on the East River and I have put in just on the east side near her house, nice public ramp, short run to the mouth and the lighthouse.

I recommend going with a guide to help get the feel of it, something I may do next time around.

My bro has a place on the North River. We fly fished Mobjack in October for speckled trout. Caught a bunch of small ones on the weed beds in the shallows. Also caught a schoolie striper. A couple of guys hoisted some nice specks for us to see as they cruised by. Had to be at least 23 inches. Nice fish! Evidently springtime for specks is best in Mobjack.

All around the lighthouse flats can be worked for fall puppy drum, especially near the dead trees. Any of the shallows/points can be worked spring and fall for specs and schoolies; all summer for croaker (a nice croaker in shallow water is a real fighter). Good spots are rip-rap walls at high tides, channels where creeks empty out, sea grass, and oyster grounds. In the spring, look for the one or two small boats out EARLY in the AM drifting (and don't get close to them; they are usually on big areas of grass).
