any of you guys a toyota tech?

97 4runner. ran fine till this morning. started up and thenemmediately sounded like something went wrong like a belt or soemthing, and shut off halh a sec later. thought it was timing belt, but belt is intact. When I try to start it all it does is try to start but it sounds like the starter is trying but nothing much is happening ohter than the normal starting sound (but weaker)but no turnover. put a gun on it and it sems like no spark. tried jumping the diagnostic /shorting the diagnostic system but recieved no eingine light signals?? checked igniton fuse, it's fine. trying to trouble shoot so I don't end up blindly replacing stuff trying to find the problem.

thanks,
anthony

My guess would be the timing belt jumped and now the moter is out of time....how many miles ya got and which motor--4cyl or 6 cyl??

Check the rotor in relation to TDC...see what ya got.

Ever get Her fixed?Just saw the post, was going to reccomend taking the Sepentine Belt off,If an Altenator,A/C Pulley bearing ,etc. locks up.It can keep the Engine from cranking.

Bad mass air flow sensor and O2 sensor.......Toyota wants around $650 for the M.A.S and $180 for the O2. After market is $350 and $130.....this sucks. Will try looking online for better price.

pop the top out of the air flow meter to see if it is broken

Your engine will still crank over with a bad mass air flow sensor and 02sensor.
If the motor ran yesterday and did not shut off or start with a big thump, and now turns over, more than likely is is not a internal engine issue.
Beware of the dealerships they are not the most honest businesses.

#1 check your battery , a tick , tick, tick sound or extremely slow turn over means bad battery, try hooking up 2 batteries (jump start)
#2 I had a a/c compressor seize up on me when doing 55 and the darn engine stalled out, and I could not keep it running. A bad or seized a/c compressor, h20 pump, alternator will cause this problem. Check your belts, and check to see if the pulleys rotate when the engine is cranked.

If you are looking for cheep parts try a salvage yard for the mass air sensor.( Beltway Used, Skips Greenleaf etc..). The 02 sensor should not be bought Used , but a/m from Napa etc… will do just fine and will be ½ the price of the dealer.
Both the mass air sensor and the 02 sensor are easily replaced.
