As the previous poster said just make a slip knot in the line every 4'-6' and place the chicken neck in the loop and pull tight.
Another way is to use snoods. The advantage of snoods is the crabs don't fall off as quickly. If you wanted you could tie a knot in one end of a 12" piece of line, at the other end make a slip knot for the bait. Make a slip knot in the trotline and insert the knot end of the line through the loop and pull tight.
I make my snoods using 1/8" bungee cord, and a small 1" to 2" piece of 3/16" fuel line. With this method its very easy to unbait the line. You can get the bungee cord at Miller Island Crab supplies. I'll see if I can't find a picture of the set up. You may have to add a rubber flap to your prop stick to keep the bungee cord from wrapping around it.
I learned how to make my snoods by going to bluecrab.info -- do a search for snood line and you should be able to locate the information.
