I've run 18' with decent results........
I run 25' foot lines from the line to the bouy and from the bouy to the weight......when I go deep I just add another section of line to make em' 50'.
And as far as "DEEP"...........all depends on the river.....
This time of the year things get a little out of sync so to speak....... I can go on one river (like I did today) and catch crabs in 3' of water and the next day go to the PAX (couple days ago crabs were in 12') and have to find 10-14' of water:rolleyes:
Point is.....know your water.......and if you need to go deeper than 20' you might want to think about traps....

When you crabbing in 20 feet of water doesn't the line come straight up from the bottom. I mean after all, if you pull the line too tight it will not sit on the bottom and if it is too slack the line will come straight up, right?

well i got to say i thought the same thing. i figured at 20 ft line would be coming stright up at prop stick. how do you guys do it so it works? is it all i longer anchor and trot line dropper lead?
You will need long anchor lines & a little weight in the middle of the line

I just lengthen the lines to the floats and run it as normal. Never had an issue with sharp angle or not setting on the bottom. I can't pull the line too tight because I use slip knots and will cut baits off. Went as deep as 30' last year in November and they held on fine. Maybe I've just been lucky.
