My Dad, my oldest daughter’s boyfriend David, and I hunted Ft Pickett Saturday. As soon as I got to where I wanted to put David we spooked two deer, they didn’t blow they just ran off. After I had gotten David set up, he is a new bow hunter, I moved back up the hill a couple hundred yards from him. I found a decent looking spot and went up the tree. Saw nothing until about 6:40 when I heard something coming fast from the opposite hill. I eased around and looked and caught a glimpse of three black “blurs”. Bears, naw, probably turkeys. Well they are getting closer and closer and I am thinking if it was turkey’s they should soon fly up to roost. Here they come, crunch, crunch, crunch. Holy cow!!!!!! It is a black bear sow and two cubs! They came within 20 yards of my stand, never saw me or winded me. As a matter of fact the sow crossed my track 3 different times while they were milling around. I was in total awe. I had my camera but was so taken aback by the event that I totally forgot to even try and get any pictures. The three of them turned and started away from me heading toward David, since he is new to the bow hunting and tree stand thing I called on the radio and told him to sit tight until I got back to him because there are three bears heading your way. He said “what did you say”? I said bears, three of them coming your way. I proceed to pack my stuff, had lowered the bow to the ground and I hear something else coming, yep, a spike and a doe at about 15 yards and the bow is on the ground. I was able to get the bow back up and "nocked" an arrow, but the doe saw me moving and spooked---game up. By now David is calling me on the radio wanting to know where I am, I said I was trying to get packed up and would be there shortly. I asked him what was wrong. His reply was priceless-----he said “I am a little nervous”. I about fell over laughing!
Anyway it was great seeing the bears and almost getting a whack at a deer! It was the most enjoyable hunt I have had in a while.:clap:
