Has anyone tried the Therma Cell insect repellant device? It runs on a butane cartridge and heats up an insect repellent pad you insert into the handheld device. I bought one, but haven't used it yet. It is advertised as being scent free. Regular bug spray tends to give me a headache. I hear it works really well on mosquitos. Just curiouis if anyone has used Therma Cell and your experience with it. :helpsmilie:

This will be my first year with one however I have read nothing but positive reports about it. There are several bow hunting sites where numerous threads have covered the device. All, without exception say they work like a charm and although there is a slight smell no one reports a negative impact. It actually is one of the first devices I have seen come along in awhile where everyone agrees it works.

Check out his review Trad Gang.com (tm): Thermacell skeeter contraption... (http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=31;t=000028)

they are the real deal. I use it bowhunting, put it under my seat. And I use one in the blind for early duck. Get the holster for it, makes it easier to attach to your hip or seat or anywhere.

They are worth their weight in gold during the early season. I am skeptical about these type gimmicks but I bought one last year on several of my buddies' reccomendations. They do give off a slight odor but it has not seemed to bother the deer. This past Saturday was the opening day of muzzleloader in NC and I had a doe come within 30 yards and later two spike bucks at the same distance and they did not know I was there. I did not fire up the thermacell at first but I fired it up after I killed 3 sketters within 10 minutes. Did not see any more sketters until I left the stand.

I think they are the deal. Then again maybe I could use the Thermacell as an excuse as why I did not see the big one! :)

I used it on lower eastern shore last night and it worked, but the deer did alert to it. Saw 6, two sets of 1st year deer , then a solitary doe followed by a spike. I think it'll fool the younger deer, but old mossy horns will know somethings up and bolt when he smells the odor it gives off.

Missing Fish-

Not sure about the science that supposedly says deer cannot smell thermacells, but it's possible that if they could smell the thermacell (i.e.: they were downwind) maybe they smelled you, too, and were spooked. Eliminating 100% of human odor is impossible.

Used it during turkey season- definitely worked, no worry about smell. But not so great when the wind is blowing. I suspect the bugs find a sweet spot between too windy for thermacell and too windy for them to fly. But its worth a shot. (Plus luckily its cooling of out there as we speak.)

These things are bad ass!!! I keep one strapped to my treestand and they work like a charm. As far as deer smelling them, I thought of that too, I put a drop of cover scent right on the pad and actually got a nice 8 pointer last black powder season using it. Whether or not the cover scent did the trick or not is still a guess. Therma-Cell also sells this deal with cover scents but I don't know if they are for skeeters and scent or not. I am still using my "just a drop" technique. If you don't have one, buy one, if you have one you either swear by them or will when you do use it. Good luck out there this year!!! Keep it safe:clap:
