Red Wolves are the ones that are down in the south like LA and they are indangered down there. Saw a show on them not long ago. If they are indeed in MD then they will surely be protected once they know for sure.

There is a small, but sustained population in the northern Caolina mountains and Smokey Mountains. So it is entirely possible that they may have started expanding since there re-introduction in the late 80's. It is also VERY possible that what may have caused this "sighting" or rumor is the fact that red wolves do interbreed with coyotes.

Actually guys, I received from 1st hand that they are trying to introduce them here in MD to curb the deer pop. Sounds far fetched, but where I hunt DNR has been asking landowners opinions of releasing them.

I'd like to see a more balanced deer population....but that's out of my own selfish interest in small game (quail, grouse, woodcock, & rabbit). The deer eat everything below 6' in the forest. Check out some of the studies they have done in PA where they fence off areas of the forest...the understory gets really thick and turns into really good grouse habitat.

Hopefully the 'yotes will help control the deer population.

Another thing I have heard regarding 'yotes and red wolves is that eastern 'yotes are larger than western 'yotes because they interbred with wolves up in canada before spreading southeast. Bigger = better equipped to eat deer. Given that southern deer are smaller bodied than those in more northerly climates...I'd guess that the deer in the south are in more trouble than deer further up north.

Long story short...I think there are too many deer and not enough of everything else.

They've been raising them down on the Outer Banks for years. So it might not be so far fetched.

sorry, sounds like BS to me!

coyotes are already here in every county in good numbers.

red wolves were an endagered species in NC. they were almost hunted to extinction, now they are protected, but have in-bred themselves to death with coyotes.

Ya, I haven't heard anything about re-introduction to the state. That same rumor flew around a few years ago about mt. lions and the deer population.

I think we just :jackthread:

Sorry :)

Lots of them in the Alligator river wild life protection area. Some serious remoteness there.
