I caught two new species on the fly this past week. One day I went up Piankatank and caught a few Largemouth bass. Fly of choice was a deer-hair frog. Another day I fished Stingray Point Light during a strong current flow. Fish were holding deep against the rocks and a Rio Outbound deep sinker worked very well. I managed to catch a few croaker. I'm exciting about building my list of saltwater species caught on the fly.

Nice croak. What is your technique? How do you fish the fly?

For the croaker, I anchored on the downcurrent side of the lighthouse. Casted a red-over-white clouser right against the rocks, let it sink, and stripped slowly. A fast sinking line like the Outbound type 8 was essential in the current flow to get the fly down and to keep it down. In this situation, fly tackle was more effective than spinning tackle because of the way you use the line to control your presentation. With a jig, there's nothing to keep the lure on the bottom near fish, but with the fast sinker, the fly is in the strike zone almost throughout the retrieve.

Chris- the trolling motor works great! I don't know how i ever fished without one.
Mike- I've been up there twice this summer so it's likely that you've seen my boat. On the first trip, i made it all the way to the second set of power lines and saw some HUGE fish rolling on the surface. These weren't largemouths for sure, I had no clue what they were. Any ideas?

Gotta love those trolling motors!

There's big gar and carp up there. On the flat near the island you'll see hundreds of carp spawning in the spring. In the summer you'll see lots of gar to 4' long on the surface sipping air.

I like fishing past the second powerlines... beautiful back there in the cypress swamp.
