FlyFest VI is upon us. If you're intrigued by flyfishing, but haven't taken the plunge, this a is a great learning opportunity. It's free too!
September 8th is the date, just North of Solomons Island on the Patuxent River (my house.) Each year we have about 35 people and 12 boats. This year, we're opening up a bit more with an invite to CCA Southern Maryland Chapter.
Rain or shine barring hurricanes. The fish are in, and I saw our first spaniard of the season yesterday morning. In fact, we're throwing in a spanish mackeral contest this year, to see who land the greatest number on a fly. In support of this, we'll have a little clinic on the techniques we've learned over the last couple of years.
Please chime in with your attendance plans and whether you're bringing a boat.
We're starting at 12 noon. You can easily fish before that and we should be back out in the boats by around 2:30 or so. Bring a simple side dish. I'll provide chicken for the Bar-B-Que. And bring DRINKS!
Bring your used gear for a swap/sell table.
We'll be pairing up Novice and Expert Flyfishers during the BBQ.
Talk to your novice friends - it's a good opportunity to learn the basics for salt.
Special Events:
Volunteer here - We'll have some casting instruction , one way or another. Plenty of gear to try out as well.
Tying - What's your favorite? We'll have a couple of vises set up - bring some material and entertain us during lunch!
I'll give a quick talk on the spanish, and perhaps Mike or David can assist. They both had good success last season as well.
Who is Coming? These are the ones who confirmed in an earlier post....

Chris, I'd like to join you again this year, plan to bring my boat weather permitting, otherwise will drive; would be happy to take a newbie or two out. If possible, I'd much like to do as I did 2 years ago, and transfer anyone who needs to get back to your place to another boat so I can head north, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Chris,
I personally won't be able to make it to this fine event(a wedding  ), but I hope to send at least a few delegates of the Patuxent River Chapter of CCA.
I hope everyone has a nice time. Don't forget to take a lot of pictures, and try to avoid hooking fleshy appendages!

btw - Guys, Tony and I jumped a gang of 21 to 24" rockfish yesterday. They had trapped a big bait ball against the beach. Topwater madness in 2 or 3 feet of water! 30 minutes later, when that chaos was over, we started working several hours of non stop breakers of the same size.
If the winds are kind, these spots are possible locations for the afternoon of FlyFest.

Yeah! - It's looking good! I went out there this morning before work. Rockfish and blues were in the midst of a rampaging massacre of silversides, and I saw 2 spanish jumping clear.
The tide prediction for that day is looking good too - High tide around Noon, so the current should be a nice outgoing when we get out there around 2:30 or 3.
For those of you coming from a distance, I can offer tent space in the yard if you want to stay over the night before or after. Tying up to the pier is fine too.

It's going to be kind of tough for me to get my boat. Not 100% yet but I'd sure like to be. There's been some great reports from that area. I'd be in for some dawn patrol too. Or some evening patrol at least. I know it's tough to do both.

I will be bringing a dawn patrol person as mentioned before. Andy Spence will be joining me for the day. I have room for another in the evening as I will be most likely running the boat.
A third can hop on mine for the evening but only two can fish with fly at a time.
I will bring dipping oil and bread as well as olives. Fresh parm cheese as well.

I will be coming down with my son and a buddy in his boat. With three already it would be a little crowded, wish I could accomodate someone.
Is there anything in particular we are lacking food wise?
paxfish
09-07-2007, 09:12 AM
That's fine, Bill. I'll mark you as three people.
Food wise - bring your favorite side dish and some beverages to cover your crew. I've got a whole lotta chicken to cook.
btw Gang - Looking for a BBQ chef to man the grill for an hour or so around 11:30 while I hustle about getting everything in place. Volunteers?

I just somehow managed to work in a job in St. Mary's County on George's Creek on Saturday. It will only take me an hour or so but I have to be there at high tide (11-12ish). This way it pays the gas and pays me a days worth of work on a Saturday.. OVERTIME!! Or offset time so I can fish next week, mid week one day. And I still get to fish with someone on Saturday afternoon. I'll be there on my own around 1pm or so and ready fish the evening bite.
Capt Mike.... I like olives.
Chris... I will have another easy job in Leonardtown next week sometime. I ccould make a dawn patrol trip. Either that or I'll fish Cove Point from shore. I have private access.:D

Pax,
I'll volunteer to BBQ.
Is there a particular channel that our group should use while on the water?
Flying Fish
09-07-2007, 09:49 AM
Pax: If experience isn't needed, I'll be happy to man the BBQ for a while. I'm sure there'll be plenty of people who can do it for a while; you for sure will be able to get away.
