Left RI @ O'Dark thirty following the missginny's white light as we could see little else, thanks Duane, heading for the SE Lumps. My crew consisted today of my son Tim and a good friend Ronnie. This was our first trip out of RI and it was uneventful with a skunk written all over it BUT. As we got closer to the Lump we passed over a decent line of grass and both Duane and I looked over the grass with no sightings of dolphin after throwing squid to see if we could wake them up. Left the grass and went the few more miles and started trolling hoping for the gaffer that we wanted. Well we trolled and trolled until about 11AM with missginny and VTFisher(David) around the SE Lumps and then up to the Hot Dog with not even a knock down. All the other boats we kept seeing kept going out passed us. H'mmm, should we have made that trek? With my 2 stroke fuel guzzling Merc 250 probably not. Anyway, left the trolling to Duane and David and headed back to our MOB @ the Lump then put the GPS for a line back to RI. About three miles W we found the mats and had a bailer on the troll within 10 minutes with another 5 minutes later  finally. Called in Duane and told him that we thought he should come in, who in turn called David. Lots and Lots of trolling up and down the scattered grass with a few nice mats with 5 in the box @ 2:30 and called it a day. Duane tried of chunking and bring up the bailers right before leaving but wasn't able to get them to bite. We "thunk" it was too hot for them on the top and they had lock jaw. Great day on the water and THANKS AGAIN Duane for your guideance out in the darkness to a beautiful day to be on the water.

Not a bad "first" trip. Something for your effort, plus you get to "size-up" your fuel burn.

Great time trying to find a fish at the Hotdog Sat. Nice fishing with Jack and David, We'll have to try again once the offshore fishing becomes a little mare productive.

Jack, I don't think running another 30 miles would have been much better, based on the reports I see.....there were a lot of boats running east and not that many reports of fish....even Va Beach Fishing Center site shows few fish for charters.....don't think a charter trip these dog days of summer would be very productive either....and the wallet would suffer even more!!!!

David, great first trip....I had two guys that hadn't ever been offshore, so I played Cap't and mate....thought we had a chance baiting them up but they didn't even eat the chunks...much less the ones with hooks in them....that one we caught when you came by....I got wacked in the head with a weed covered dolphin!!!! I think it went wild in the boat because when he caught it there ws so much grass covering it that it couldn't even wiggle!!!

Nice ride back to inlet and even the HRBT was clear westbound!!!! Long time since I didn't have to even tap the brakes going home.
