Adding 4"-6" to your Fly

I'm getting ready for CBBT this winter and decided to try my luck tying up some bigger flies. After reading a recent article in Saltwater Fly Fishing about extending the length of a fly by using two vises, I thought I would try my luck with a differnt techique. I cut about a 6" length oh clear weedwacker line (proabaly about the diamenter of 100lb mono), melted the end (to help prevent my thread from slipping off the end) and clamped it into my vice. After tying on a bunch of white hackles, some bucktail and layering them back along the line, I tied my mono thread off. It made some nice 4-6" long tails. After tying the tails to a hook and completing a couple of half and halfs, the flies actually look pretty good. I was wondering if anyone has tried a similar techique or if my way will work out OK. Do I need a trailer hook for a fly around 8" or so? Thanks for your help. I can't wait for this winetr down at CBBT!!!

When I first read that subject line, I thought Timeflies had started posting fly-fishing spam to the board. You know, instead of adding 4 to 6 inches to my "johnson," he's going to help me add it to my deceivers. Always preying on the longrodder's insecurities!

Now you are talking. I like big flies for big fish. You do not need a trailer hook for stripers because they normally hit the head of the fly. Blues will chop there way up the fly but not stripers.

I always have some magnum flies for down there but most of the time last year the fish were on 5" to 6" bunker not the 10" variety. A full white 7" Clouser with bucktail tied in at the hook bend and a silver flash tail was deadly on big fish. I tie them on an Owner long shank bass hook that has a very large gap. The advantage to the 7" flies over the 10" size is castability. With a custom tip express line on a ten wt, you can toss the entire line with a 7" fly--not so far with a 10 incher.

This year could be different and the big fish could be on big bunker. You need to be ready for anything.
