Fletchers April 24, 2007

Night and day difference between Sunday afternoon’s conditions and this evenings conditions. I had work obligations until 6:30 and was fishing by 7 in the fast water up river from fletchers. Little Falls gauge was around 4.5, temp 18 C. The river temp has raised 10 degrees C in just 7 days! Clarity was around 2 feet, outgoing tide, approaching low tide by the time I left at 9:30pm. There was a half moon that put out plenty of light to fish and to even stumble around on a few rocks.

Catch:

Hickories galore. Double hook ups were very common with a tandem fly rig, pink on the bottom and chartreuse on top. Once I hooked up I would usually let the fish sit in the current for a few seconds with the rod pointed down but upstream towards the bank I was on. This prevented the fish from jumping and hopefully would stop the fly from popping out of the fish’s mouth and ending up in the skull of a few spin fishermen who thought it was okay to crowd a fly guy. When I had a shad on with the rod point down for a few seconds, a second one could be seen swirling after the remaining fly. Several times this resulted in a double hook up. Most hickories near shore were the smaller 15” males but the larger fish were further out hiding behind the boulders. All the smaller males were happy to see me and were spitting milt all over the place. Fish could be seen doing their acrobatic synchronized whirlwinds as they actively spawned for as far as the eye could see.

As it got dark the herring came out to play in the shallows and I started snagging them all of a sudden with the double fly rig. It got to be a real pain in the a$$ unhooking dorsal fin hooked herring but for some reason the hour earlier this never happened. Plus this was the first time I caught a shad well past sunset on a fly! Conditions are prime, it’s peak, it’s time! It was like a seen from Planet Earth out there tonight. I think I got my shad fix.

Next time I’m going to handicap myself and bring the 3 wt with no sinking line. I honestly think it wouldn’t have mattered tonight the fishing was so good. Floating line could easily get the job done although I was throwing a full sinker.

Very nice!

Carlos and I may try it in the rain Friday from the boat. It will be a fly mission but there will be trolling on the way up and back in the no wake areas as well as a rod out the side to see if the blue kitties (or a striper) want to chew.

Thanks for the report!

Jon:
how late can shad be caught. I was under the impression (probably wrong) that the bite dies after sunset. The reason I ask is I may have a chance to sneak out later this afternoon (7pm-sh for about an hour and a hlf.

I'll be very interested to know how you do with the floating line. Yesterday, the insanity continued, with Americans and a few white perch in the mix as well. But I was using a full-sink line.

I caught my last hickory at 8:30 yesterday and even caught a herring, properly at 9:30pm, in complete darkness but most of the herring were snagged and they were no where to be found around 7 ish.

If you make it out at 7 it will be PRIME TIME for at least an hour. Stay after dark a little, the river comes ALIVE after dark.

I hope this continues but I fear the end is near. There was a strange smell in the air yesterday, probably attributed to all the spawning fish.

I'm tempted to take my step son who is 8 there tonight and my 7 month old son but being perched on those rocks with a 25 pound load hanging off my chest is probably not the smartest thing to do. Maybe I'll go crappie fishing at a local lake and luck into a muskie. That would be nice.

I'll be there tomorrow evening for sure, in the boat. Staying well past sunset.

Flaming hot hickory action continues at Fletchers. Fished there today (Wed, 11:00am-2:00pm) from shore with spinning gear. Many many very nice hickories and 1 nice American. Most shad fishermen were also doing well. Water vis still slightly dirty at 2'-3', but clear enough, apparently. Did a lot of deep water dredging out in the center hunting for Americans to no avail. The one I caught is in close in 8' of water... so who knows where they will be. Medium-high amount of fishing pressure but still spots available especially if you have hip boots. Depending on the weather, I might try again tomorrow at sun-up.

BTW, I fished the Susky on Tuesday. Water vis in the Susky is still poor at about 12". Deer Creek in great shape. HEAVY fishing pressure, around 5:00pm, from Stafford up past the pump station, bring your own rock... and parking space too. I didn't get outta the car (no parking left) but I saw several hooking up as I did a slow driveby. Fished the Susky for a while 150yds upriver from Rock Run Mill. Decent action for dink hickories... but all very small. Action at base of Conowingo was SLOOOW with an occassional American showing up. Only 12-15 fishermen at the dam... that sorta says it all.
