hey guys , question about your depth finders. do most of you guys have the basic transom mounts or do you guys use the epoxied to the hull style. lost my transducer to a submerged piece of sh!t 400 yds out of elk neck today. broke the bracket . wondering if the thru hull is the way to go. thanks for the input.

When I bought my Jones Brothers Cape Fisherman 1910LT, I had Martek on Kent Island (at the foot of the Bay Bridge on the Eastern Shore) install the electronics. I remember asking them about a through-hull installation, and they looked at me like I was crazy and told me that I didn't want to drill a hole through the bottom of the hull. They recommended a transom-mount installation. I haven't had any problems with it. They do good work, by the way, and I'd recommend them. I decided on a Raymarine package with the C80 display.

Most of todays thru-hulls actually shoot through the hull and are not mounted in a hole through the bottom but the signal is degraded some if they no sealed to the bottom in epoxy. I would just stick with transom mounts, most will kick up if they hit something and if it breaks off just buy another as the thru-hulls are over priced for what they offer.
When you mount the next one don't put it so far under as it should come just barely below the bottom of the hull.

I have an airmar tilted element, only protrudes from the hull about 1/8 inch.

no worries about breaking off and is an easy hole to cut.

If you don;t want to drill into your transom, consider my approach. I used a 1" thick piece of starboard bonded to the hull with 5200. You can then screw your 'ducer mount into that.
I used to shoot through the hull with my 'ducer epoxied to the inside of the hull. The sounder worked fine, but I found that I missed the accurate temp readings....
