More Fly Patterns

Bonefish suggested I post some pics of a pattern that I have come to love. These are my swimmer flys that I started making a few yrs ago. I love Bob Pops poplip but I am too lazy to make sure I get the lip just right. These have a tighter wiggle but they swim right off the vise.:D

Flylips have been sold and used for the last couple of years in Florida.I'm sure the inventer has a website.

Bottom picture pink fly on top... did you use a two turn palmer on the front with the marabou? I started to do that on my btds for a little more movement by the head.
I think it looks great on your ties.

Do the heads cause any rotation during the cast or retrieve? How about added buoyancy on the head? ....a curious mind wants to know.

I just saw some little cups like that in the Orvis fly-tying catalog. Orvis calls them "Petitjean Magic Heads." And in typical Orvis fashion, they charge a buck apiece for those little guys. Anywhere to get them cheaper than that, Bill? They look like they'd give mean action. Cool thing is you can flip the cup back over the head and turn it into a normal fly.

First off let me say that these were not made to copy someone elses lips or heads. They were made to fill my needs for different situations. I wanted a fly that I could make small changes to, to do some things that other patterns cant. The idea was to fish a fly in moving current with a tight wiggle, or to use a slow retrieve on the surface to create a wake, or to be able to rip the fly back with quick strips and it not roll over. If you make these out of Marabou and Ostrich, you get unbelievable action. If you use bucktail, you still get good action, and it would and does hold up if you have feeding or frenzied fish. If you make it with a foam shoulder or back you have a popper/swimmer. Largemouth bass love this thing also, just adjust the colors. Dave, you can get these at Michaels or AC Moore for about $1.60 for 6 of them. I get the size that measure 7/8" in the pack and when I make the smaller ones I trim them to about 5/8", there is a line you can just follow that will make it round. One key thing that is used in making these is to use a little more material on top than on bottom for ballasting. Also the longer you make the tail out of someting stiff, the less action you get. The longer the tail, the bigger the cup that is needed to get the right wiggle. Have fun with them, I do. Bill:))
