Flying Fish
04-15-2007, 06:32 PM
I've just got back from California, and although I did fish a bit there (one 17-inch jack smelt and one 24-inch 'cuda), I was going crazy hearing about the great shad fishing I was missing, especially thanks to one of you who was kind enough to rub it in with what seemed like a dozen emails. ;-)

I got back too late yesterday to fish, so I went this morning. Of course they weren't renting boats, and I had not wanted to get there at daybreak because I was a little nervous about a rising tide and a rising river, but I was fishing by 8 and it was redhot (every cast and some casts two or more hits when I missed the first one) for a while; I got about 10 hickories, including some nice ones, one medium American, and one medium mud shad. Turned out that a smallish orange fly with some flash and a brass cone-head was the killer; I got all the fish but one on that fly and the other fly was a normally very successful chartreuse and yellow fly.

There was a seam 40-80 feet out; beyond that the river was somewhat muddy and inside it it still was green and reasonably clear, but the fishing slowed and by 9.45 it was dead. There wasn't much wind at all. I think the river will be tough at best until about the time I leave town again :( on Friday; by then and for the weekend, I bet it will be smoking again.
