Glenn, is this what you were talking about? I had to tie a few witches today for Bill so I tied these as well... Never thought of running them like you suggested but I see how they would work nicely over a shad... Let me know if this is close to what your using now...

Bill is going to try the Chartreuse and Red one over a 9' or 10' sassy shad...

The bad thing to these is that I didn't have white hair so I used my crystal... I think I'll have to buy some plain white or fluoroscent white to keep the cost down...

Let me know what you think!

man, that would be a waste to use them purty things on saltwater carp with stripes[tongue]

Too bad they don't look like that in the water, and they'll never look like that again after a few times trolling.

Becky:

You really know how to hurt a guy[grin]

I think I'll just frame the one you gave me..... just too pretty to get messed up!

Shouldn't have turned my back while you were tying the other night. I tied three more tonite.... I was almost pleased with them until I saw your post[grin]

Thanks again for the 'quick' lesson.

They look REAL good...and using a witch/hook is usually cheaper than a store-bought small mojo or parachute...and the way you tie them they look much better!! Plus you know you have a quality hook vs. some store bought stuff.

I'll shoot you a bmail about some...I like the Chartruese a lot. If you get plain white hair, just try some all white with some of that mylar flash...like I mentioned, some times white is IT.

Real nice...

definitely a lot cheaper than buying mojo's. aftermy mojoe's get screwed up i just tie fish hair back on them like you have and they are good to go for a couple more rounds- pretty witches btw!

Glenn, give me some input on the style heads I used... Carolina versus rounded??? Heavier versus smaller??? Color preferences???

Also on the hair... Color variations? More or less hair? Solid or mixed colors? Etc...

I plan to make a few more today just to see what looks good? Brian (Fishboy01) picked the colors / styles I tied yesterday... He's all into Striper fishing...

Let me know what you think?

Can't wait to get some Striper... I haven't had any in a long time!!!!

Where can I order the metal bodies? I do a lot of fly tying, and have everything else. They look great.

sheesh, im thinking about hoo-witches for 55 cents apeice that look better than anything store bought. Thanks for posting this.

Since you're only using it as a trailing bait, I don't think the weight matters all that much. For a trailing bait, I use anything from a regular 1/2 oz witch to a 2-3 ounce parachute. I've not noticed much difference but emulating those Andrus parachutes in the 1-3 oz range (with better hair, flash and hooks) would be a solid bet for me. The out of the box Andrus hooks cannot really support a 12' shad, only a 9' due to the smaller hook.

As for hair/styles...our striper fishery in the ocean usually means pretty wide open bites and many days, they'd eat a hot dog with a hook [grin] but I prefer straight white with flash and the chart/green/yellow and flash like you have there. White with some red is good as well (light on the red). And I plan to try some pink this year too.

I don't think using a lot of hair will hurt. I know for tuna/bally rigs you go light on the hair but for stripers, my mojo rigs have quite a lot of hair and when we have big bait around, I like a 12-14' bait profile (head, hair and shad body included).

Hope this helps...and don't forget to try them as the trailer bait on the umbrella rig.

Fishfool- I get the heads at Whalebones or TW's... The rounded heads are bought as single items and the carolina heads are packaged... I've also bought them at Greentop, PAD, Wilcox and Lighthouse tackle...

Glenn, I'll post some more pics later... I am about to go buy some white hair so I won't have to use my Crystal... That's too expensive... I don't think it matters as much w/ Stripers versus Tuna's... Stripers are far more dosile and less picky! [grin]

Heaver, my witches hold up pretty good... They have been tested!!! LOL We ran one really hot witch for almost a full season before it finally lost it's hair... And that was after being chomped by wahoo, tuna and dolphin... So far they have lasted longer than anything we've store bought...

Im going to Greentop today. Isnt it great to make your own stuff? it brings the obsession to a whole new level. I have been playing around with epoxy for a while, and hope to get some acrylic for doing resin squid- heads this winter. i just cant bring myself to be paying 30$+ for $3.00 in materials ( Especially when I have most of them already). Makes me think of Indians whitleing hooks out of bones by the campfire (well, Gammi's and my TV.)).
Thanks for the post.

Those are the prettiest things I've ever seen. I wouldn't bother feeding them to stripers. Becky, shoot me a bmail as I'd like to get a few of the 2oz head 1's for deep baits IF you can make enough to sell.

Those sure are purty, I think I am gonna decorate are x-mas tree this year with some new witches, I'll tell my wife they are new ornaments, she will never know the difference, ssshhhhhhh, she's coming [wink]

Becky

TKB- I did that last year for Bill... I set up an artificial tree of 'lights' only, like the ones you decorate your front yard with and then hung seawitches /squidwitches / stretches / shads and other fishing stuff from it as decorations... I set it up in the window to display proudly too!!! [excited]

Was pretty funny when the neighbor called and asked me if I was decorating the tree with fishing lures... Clearly he thinks we've lost it! [grin]

Becky, You would have lost it only if you had put on used fishy smelly ones[grin]
I'll be nice, I will even use pink, pink/white ones, should be real nice with white lights. [wink]

Becky

Rumor has it that one of them still had fresh blood on it!!! [grin]

Just pickin...

But at the rate I'm making them I'm thinking I can decorate the tree, windows and doors... Except Bill keeps taking them... I swear on this last trip he had all but 2 or 3 new rigs on...

I keep telling him his success comes from pulling my lures!!! He thinks it's cause he trolls over the fish??? [grin][grin] Silly man... [tongue]

Again, just kidding... Bill is a top notch Cappie and does his homework before every trip... He puts us on them time and time again!!!

But it is cool to make a new witch (that usually looks like nothing we've ever seen before) and to think, 'Yeah, that's the next best bait!'... Of course Bill usually calls it ugly and swears we'll never run it... Then I sneak it out and Whammm, Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz it get's hit... And then again and again and again... Next thing I know, Bill is asking for 6 more just like it!!!

I love it!

Hmm Beck have you ever thought about starting a little business with your wares?

You do tie some mean witches fo sure.

Becky

Hey J-Man... Been sick sorry it took so long to get back to you...

I've thought about selling them but there really is not a market for them... Every now and then someone who fishes w/ us asks about them and we work out an arrangement for a couple here and there but that's about it... I've looked at different tackle shops and to get set up w/ packaging and advertising and everything else it takes.... I decided against it... [sad] Too much involved...

You want me to make you some so you can bring them w/ you when you fish w/ us??? [grin]

Doug, this is a squidwitch... I took a couple different angles of it to show the molded squid inside the witch... For lack of better definition...
