Get the original DFA(Death from Above) made custom from a board member, bayrunnerrods. I have fished with Jimmy K and his DFA has proven very effective on a number of trips. Martin

There are some members on here that make them, Get one and set it up with an in line planer, so you can unsnap it and reel that last hundred feet of line in.

Do you have to have rodholders with backing plates? I have read where some are using a # 24 planner. There would seem to be alot of pressure upon strike if you are using an 80 wide with 25 to 35 lbs of drag. Thanks for any info.

u don't need a 24 planer for just pulling bally/witches. A old salty #8 is fine for witches with a 100' of line from planer, if need to get deeper than 100' or pull bigger baits a #12 works well, i have #16 but don't see the need unless u pull a horse/illander with 200 yards of leader very deep

We fished OI a couple weeks ago and parked next to some fishermen that were running an inline setup like TKBMECH talked about and it out produced all their other rods. Those guys had a couple citation hoos they caught deep and probly would of kept on catchn, but a spoon poped out of the hoos mouth when they went to gaf it and stright into the gaffers elbow (ended the trip). Hope the guys doing better now. They explaied how they set up the inline planer but i did not completly understand. They had braid on the rod with a wind on leader with a loop that they hooked to the planer. If anyone knows how to rig this inline planer I'm all ears. I usaly cleat a planer off the back of the boat and hook a downrigger clip to the back of the planer. Thanks for any tips.

I can tell you how to rig the in-line planer and would be happy to do so. I have a planer rod built by Bishop's tackle in Yorktown and an Avet pro EX 2 spd 50 wide reel spooled with 150 lb Power Pro the set up works great. I also agree that the #8 Old Salty planer is all you need perhaps a #12 once in a while. As far as backing plates go the strike is not necessarily the problem simply the drag required to pull a #16 is in excess of 50 lbs!!!!! So put in a backing plate and use a safety strap on the rod!!!!!

I have a custom planer rod from Wayne Fowlkes (Wayne's Custom Rods: 757-481-4107) in Va. Beach, he's rated as one of the top rod builders in the world and his rods are the sh^t.
I use an Shimano Tiagra 50 LRS, topped off with 200 lb power pro, rigged as a wind on and life is a lot easier, especially when we sometimes run 100' leader.
Whatever you chose, be sure to get a strong blank with tough guides, a reel with a lot of torque and cranking power.
Also be sure to reinforce your rod holder, preferably with a backing plate as there will be a lot of strain on it.
Hope this helps....
Happy Hunting.........

We run a Bayrunner custom planer rod with a Tiagra 80. 200lb braid with a 125 foot top shot of Momoi 130lb. The planer is bridled so it can be removed and the fished reeled all the way to the gaff from the rod holder. We carry an assortment of planers bridled, #8, #16, and #24 Old Salty. #8 for witch/hoo, #16 ilander/horse hoo and #24 for when they are down deep. We have never put the planer out and not caught either a tuna or wahoo on it. I would recommend a backing plate or better yet a lee swivel rod holder. There are some planer rod video's here http://www.sportfishermen.com/movies/category/7
also how to rig the bridle system

We have the same Death-from-Above (DFA) rod from Bayrunner Rods. Added a Lee, Extra-Length, swivel rod holder to the starboard side, between the other two holders. With the available Lee backing plate. This puts the tip of the rod within easy reach when you are at the starboard aft corner of the cockpit, so it is easy to clip the planer on or off. Concur with the safety strap.

Yeah, I too have & use the rigs above. Acually own a some times run 2 of them. #8 & #12 off each corner when ness & they catch lots of fish on days when they are pressured or the top 100 ft of water is murky. The problem with this setup that can't be avoided is hook pull outs. I have spent my money so I continue to justify my expense by useing them but if you read the post Swancaller put up on useing a down rigger with rubber band to seperate down rigger /planer set up, you avoid having to hover over the deep rig all day waiting to pull back the drag at hookup + you can use any rod in your normal spread to send down. This system also allows you to adj the distance from the boat to the planer as well as the exact position of your hook bait easily as ness. Also if fishing wire for Wahoo & you get whacked but it doesn't stay tight, you can drop it back since the rubberband allready broke & you will still get his a$$. Also anybody on the boat can clear the planer. It's so easy to just crank in that you don't have to trip it on the downrigger.
Like I said, many people do it the other way & so do I, but I have seen how well the downrigger method works & it is something to consider for sure. Either way, the single most important thing is to know when to have it out & when not to. It can make or break your day either way.
I plan to experiment with the downrigger next year to see if it inproves catch ratios when they are pulling hooks like they have been this fall.

Billy--definitely use the 80 on the planer setup that you purchased. get with Capt Smutt & take a look at the wind-on planer setup. Best bet.

Ok now yall got me thinking about all this planer rod and all the good stuff. And Im also itchin to spend some money I guess. Got a couple questions. The rod is set in a swivel rod holder when in action, right? Is a bent butt rod necessary or does it just make life easy? When in a situation where no chair is available, when a fish is hooked up on a bent butt rod is the fish fought from a swivel holder or is a bucket harness necessary? Is the swivel holder ok to troll regular non bent butt rods from, for example a tld25 or 30? What degree of angle is needed for the swivel base rod holder also? Thanks for the words of advise.

The rod is set in a swivel rod holder when in action, right?Correct Is a bent butt rod necessary or does it just make life easy? It makes every thing work much better due to the angle, and torque. straight butts were used for many years though (and still are)When in a situation where no chair is available, when a fish is hooked up on a bent butt rod is the fish fought from a swivel holder or is a bucket harness necessary? From rod holder Is the swivel holder ok to troll regular non bent butt rods from, for example a tld25 or 30? Sure, but the swivel holder is 130 lb class and is deep. for short stand up rods, a spacer is neededWhat degree of angle is needed for the swivel base rod holder also?15 degrees Thanks for the words of advise.

If you've got an 80 wide DFA setup with 30-40 lbs of drag you'd have to be a horse to get that thing out of the rod holder. A swivel rod holder along with a bent but helps you fight that fish right in the rod holder. I fish stand up and that combo is to heavy for my 300lb frame to handle.

Ben,
I Have A 6/0 Senator That We Have Been Using On A Short Aluminum But Rod With 80# Powerpro And The Bridal Rig On A Solid Custom Strait Butt Rod. We Have Had No Problems What So Ever With The Rig. We Actually Do Not Crank Down The Drag All The Way And Let It Creep Out Every So Often. Alot Of Top Notch Charter Guys Will Tell You To Do This. It Covers A Lot Of Water Columns. We Can't Pull Above A #8 Salty Planner, But I Have Rarely Needed It Thus Far. Would A More Expensive And Heavier Set Be Nice Yes, But It Is Not Absolutely Necessary. I Would Prefer To Have A 9/0 Senator. That Or A 12/0 Is What A Lot Of The Charter Captains Down South Use. Alot Of Them Don't Use The Bent Butts Either.

Gaw,
You da man! Thanks for the reply.
Casey,
Thanks for your input as well!
I take it that a 50w 2-speed will do the trick, but then again Im thinking about GBT fishing in the future so I am probably going to lean towards a 70vsw or an 80. What say ye?

I use a Tiagra 80, but have used a friend's Tiagra 50 as well. Others may have found differently, by my set up performs much better with only a half spool of line. (backing/spectra combined). I pull a #16 old salty.
Jimmy sure loves that sissy spoon:D

Aftco came out with a new short bent butt last spring that actually fits the rod holder without needing a spacer. The short works much better in a drop down harness.

Jimmy K,
Where do you buy that type of spoon ? I don't see any that look like that anywhere.
Where is a good place to get those 12 and 16 planers. The only thing I see up here are 3 5 8's
Thanks, Hill Billy
